Suspects sought in Sunday shooting

Barnwell police are seeking the public's help in apprehending the suspects of three recent shootings.
James Edwards Person and Steven Dewayne Simmons are wanted in connection to the Jan. 29 shooting in the parking lot of JimBo's convenience store on Dunbarton Blvd., Barnwell, which sent one man to an area hospital. They are being charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, said Barnwell Police Chief Todd Gantt.

District 45 rates operational

Barnwell District 45 updated its stakeholders on their accreditation process during a Jan. 30 community meeting.
Stakeholders are members of the community, including students, parents, faculty, staff and other residents in District 45.


Committee helps decide where to expend funds

Barnwell’s transportation committee is working to improve county roads.
The Barnwell Transportation Committee was formed prior to 1994. The committee completed paving the city overflow parking lot across from the police station in November 2011 and has a list of future projects.
“We paved the Barnwell city overflow parking lot,” said Willie Walker, chairman of the committee.
The committee is made up of seven volunteers, one from each county district. The volunteers are appointed by the Barnwell County Council.


District 45 seeks waiver to begin school early

Barnwell District 45 hopes to hit the books a week earlier than the state-mandated start date for the 2012-13 school year.
According to state law, the school year must not start before the third Monday in August, except schools that are on a year-round schedule. In their Jan. 26 meeting, the District 45 School Board approved a motion to pursue a waiver for the start date of their 2012-13 school year.


Local singer/band play at Aiken presidential debate

Christian singer/songwriter Kristie Hutson of Blackville, along with her band, Water’s Edge, which includes
her dad and guitarist, Jimmy Elkins of Williston, performed Jan. 17 at the USC Aiken Convocation Center during the GOP Presidential Debate. The event saw more than 1,000 people fill the center.


2012 Crime Series: Blackville Police Department

Blackville saw a crime decline in 2011, something the police chief hopes to build on in 2012.
“We’ve been seeing a decrease,” said Blackville Police Chief John Holston. In 2011, the town had 677 reported incidences, compared to 709 in 2010. Holston has been with the department for eight years, including five as chief.


Packed house leads to successful school fundraiser

The aerial ballerina with the Wonderland Circus performs for a packed house of at least 600 people Jan. 27 in the Barnwell Primary School gymnasium.
The event raised at least $870 which “will all go back to the school,” said PTO President Amanda Twitty. “We had a lot of support from the community.”
