Barnwell High School offers enhanced diplomas in three areas of study: academic, technical/career, and arts/humanities. Each BHS enhanced diploma, which is awarded with the South Carolina high school diploma at graduation, is an indication that the student has pursued a specific program of study. The seniors listed below are eligible for enhanced diplomas for this year:

Congratulations to the JROTC Leadership Team!
During two rounds of competitive online play, Barnwell High's JROTC team earned top scores out of the 1,138 teams who competed from across the world to earn a place in the National Leadership Bowl and Symposium to be held on the campus of George Mason University in Washington, DC from June 21-25. The BHS team is one of only forty teams in the nation to advance to the finals. Kyle Baker, Chris Bozard, Caroline Johnson, and Henry Hutto comprise the Leadership Team.

Congratulations to the eighteen seniors who have been named honor graduates from the Class of 2013: Raven Cooler, Shelby Peay, Zachary Hebbard, Samantha Sanders, Brett Williams, Morgan Reynolds, Nicole Sanders, Corey Smith, Walker Carroll, Corey Riley, Anna Thomas, Brantley Dickinson, Jordan O'Neal, Leigh Anne Davis, Mattie Brantley, Lauren Perry, Ciera Bell, and Julie Moody. Valedictorian of the Class of 2013 is Raven Cooler, and Salutatorian is Shelby Peay.

The Warhorse Café is open for business! Operated by Mrs. Ruxi Lemnaru's classes, with assistance from Mrs. Carol Free's Teacher Cadet class, this business provides the opportunity for students to practice school-to-work skills. Students are responsible for all of the day-to-day operations of a coffee shop such as the set-up and clean-up, customer relations, finances, inventory and advertising. The Warhorse Café is located in the lobby of the main entrance of the school and is open for business before school.

Colonel Mike Biddle and Sergeant Jerry Smith would like to recognize the JROTC Battalion Commander, Senior Mark Johnson, and his staff for the outstanding work they did in hosting the Veterans Day Brunch on Monday, Nov. 12. The entire BHS family extends gratitude to all veterans for their tremendous sacrifice and service.

On Sunday, Nov. 4, the Warhorse Chapter of the National Honor Society held its annual induction ceremony in the BHS Media Center. The senior officers explained the four key components required for membership: President Corey Riley spoke on service, Vice-President Brantley Dickinson spoke on character, Secretary Leigh Anne Davis spoke on leadership and Treasurer Shelby Peay spoke on scholarship.

As the 2010-11 school year comes to a close, much is happening on the campus of Barnwell High School. Several of our spring sports teams are currently involved in state play-offs. Spring football practice is taking place. Student body and class officer elections for next year have been held. The National Honor Society recently collected items for the Ronald McDonald House. Both students and faculty are looking forward to other end-of-the- year activities such as Freshman Academy Field Day, the distribution of yearbooks, and graduation activities.

The BHS student body recently collected money for two worthwhile causes. The Muscular Dystrophy Drive, sponsored by BHS Student Council, raised over $1,700 which will allow two children to attend camp. Mr. Miller's, Mrs. Boylston's and Mrs. Hutchinson's classes collected the most money. Mrs. Ruxi Lemnaru's classes collected over $200 in the Pennies for Patients Drive, with the proceeds going to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Student registration is underway for 2011-12. On Feb. 23, 24 and 25 the rising seniors, along with their parents, selected courses for the next school year and updated individual graduation plans (IGPs). On March 2, 3 and 4 rising juniors will be doing the same, and on March 8, 9 and 10 the rising sophomores will be choosing their courses for the new school year and updating IGPs. Guinyard-Butler 8th graders will be signing up for their first year of high school courses at the end of March.

Second semester is in full swing at BHS with many activities planned for the coming weeks. The Guidance Department hosted a Financial Aid Workshop for seniors and their parents on Jan. 27. The annual Warhorse Club Membership Drive for the 2011-2012 school year took place on Jan. 29 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Job Shadow Days, which allow juniors and seniors an opportunity to explore career options by shadowing potential employers, will be held on Feb. 2 and 3.
