Chamber honors county businesses and individuals

The spotlight shone on three honorees last week at the Barnwell County Chamber of Commerce annual meeting.

Rhonda McElveen was given the Community Service Award and Dixie Narco was named "Industry of the Year." A special recognition was given posthumously to Tim Moore Sr. as "2009 Barnwell County Citizen Emeritus."

The awards were presented Nov. 12 at the Chamber's annual meeting held at Sweetwater Country Club.

Interns close out summer jobs with celebration

A lot of businesses took a chance this summer.

A lot of people are glad they took that chance.

And the chance was related to the precarious ecojnimc climate.

For eight weeks 83 youth in Allendale, Barnwell and Bamberg counties got a chance to have a summer job. For 61 area employers, it was a chance to get a little extra help with the federal government footing the bill.

Countywide tour showcases local treasures

It was a day of discovery - finding new things in old places, old things in new places, and making friendships in the process.

Southern charm, gracious hosts and seeds of information were found in a garden of discovery as "ambassadors" were treated to a unique tour of Barnwell County.

On June 24 a busload of 55 "ambassadors were shuttled around Barnwell County and introduced to its sights, sounds and smells that were meant to be savored and - later - shared.

SouthernCarolina gala toasts industry and education connections

What was seemed like a gala gathering at the USC-Salkehatchie campus May 12 had a serious message for attendees to digest with their buffet - the need for an educated workforce.

The event was the annual regional celebration of SouthernCarolina Alliance, a regional development collaboration among Barnwell, Allendale, Bamberg and Hampton counties. Attendees were a mix of politicians, county administrators, economic development leaders, industry representatives and educators who were treated to a gourmet meal of heavy hors d'oeuvres.
