The local Marine Corps League is sponsoring this year's Memorial Day celebration on Monday, May 26, at 10 a.m. at Barnwell Veterans Park (U.S. 278 by the airport).
Barnwell: The Fuller Park Farmers Market will be opening for the season on Tuesday, May 27. The market is open to local artisans and crafters this year and we encourage those in the area to participate in the market.
They are accepting vendor applications for the 2014 season.

Elko: The Elko Farmers' Market is seeking vendors for its 2014 season, including farmers and gardeners with cool weather crops, early spring produce like salad greens, broccoli, cabbage, beets, garden peas, spinach and other greens. Berries and bedding plants are also good sellers in the spring and early summer. Crafters and bakers are also welcome.
It's every Saturday until mid-fall, at the corner of Hwy. 78 in Elko. WIC vouchers and senior checks are also accepted.

The Blackville Recreation Department is sponsoring an eight-week summer sports camp June 2 thru July 31 from 3 to 9 p.m. It will offer a variety of activities, including cheerleading, football, soccer and board games. It costs $20 for youth ages four to 17.

The Barnwell County Sheriff's Office will host weeklong "BE SMART" character camps this summer for rising 6th, 7th and 8th graders. The free camps will be held June 9-13 at Williston-Elko High School, June 16-20 at Barnwell Elementary, and July 14-18 at Blackville-Hilda High. All camps are from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily.
During the camp, students will learn from agencies such as SRS Ecology Lab, DNR, Barnwell Fire Dept., SCHP, Axis 1 and many more. "BE SMART" camp will educate students on safety and character. The camp is free.

During Barnwell County's Independence Day celebration Thursday, July 3, at Veterans Park, the men and women (first responders of the county: fire, EMS, police, deputies and electrical companies) who worked to get power on and keep residents safe during and after Winter Storm Pax will be honored. In addition, the evening will be full of food, music and a bigger than ever professional fireworks display. Festivities begin at 6 p.m.
Bring your chairs and picnics, several vendors will be there with good summertime food. Tune in to 90.5 FM within .5 miles of the park and listen to the music along with the fireworks.
Driver Safety Class
AARP Senior Driver Safety will hold a class on Thursday, July 17, at Generations Unlimited (10913 Ellenton St., Barnwell). Class will begin at 9 a.m. and run until 3:30 p.m. You may bring lunch or purchase it for a nominal fee from Generations Unlimited.
The cost for class materials is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members, cash or check (payable to AARP). Completion of this class may result in a discount on the participant's automobile insurance.

The FFA Plant Sale at Barnwell County Career Center is underway. Veggies, annuals, perennials and beautiful hanging baskets grown by the agriculture students will be sold Monday thru Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the school. Proceeds will be used for future projects of the FFA and student leadership opportunities.

Potted Plants/Bake Sale
Holy Apostles Church of Barnwell will hold its annual potted plant and baked goods sale from 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday, May 24. The sale will be in the vacant lot at the corner of Hagood Avenue and Patterson Street diagonally across from the church. Plants for sale include zinnias, basil, peppers, other flowering plants and herbs.
Shag to End Alzheimers
The Barnwell County Alzheimer's Association will present its 2nd Annual Shag to End Alzheimers Dance on Saturday, June 21, at 7 p.m. at the El BAB Shrine Club in Barnwell. DJ Pat Patterson with The Large Time Network will be playing beach, boogie and blues. There will be light Hor D'oeuvres, cash bar, door prizes and raffles.
Tickets are $25. All proceeds benefit the Alzheimer's Association.

The Rotary Club of Barnwell County's 4th annual Wine Tasting and Silent Auction will be Thursday, May 22, at the El BAB Shrine Club in Barnwell. Social time will be from 6:30 to 7 p.m. with wine tasting at 7 p.m. Opportunities will be available to order wines.
This fundraiser supports the club's community service projects.

Jailbreak 5K Run/Walk
The Lexington County Sheriff's Foundation invites you to join us for a morning of fun and competition at the 8th Annual Jailbreak 5K Run & Walk on Saturday, May 24, at the Lexington County Sheriff's Department (521 Gibson Rd., Lexington). Packet pick up and late registration begins at 6:15 a.m. with the race starting at 8 a.m.
The entry fee is $25 prior to race day or $30 on race day. It benefits the foundation which purchases equipment, materials, training, and supplies for the department when not otherwise provided for in the department's annual budget. The foundation is a 501(c) 3 organization.

Salk Golf Tournament
The USC Salkehatchie Athletic Scholarship Golf Tournament will be Friday, May 30, at 9 a.m. at Sweetwater Country Club in Barnwell. It will be a four-man captain's choice style and costs $50 per player. There will also be food, beverages, goodie bags and a silent auction.

Barnwell Primary Registration
Four-year-old pre-kindergarten registration for the 2014-15 school year at Barnwell Primary has been extended until May 30. It will be held every weekday from 8:30 a.m. to noon.
Parents should bring the following to register their children: SC Shot Record, Certified Birth Certificate, Child's Social Security Card, Two Current Dated Proofs (must provide current dated power bill at time of registration and one other proof of residence in parent's name & address). There is a $15 material fee due at registration.

Diabetes Support Group
The Barnwell County Diabetes Support Group meets every Tuesday night from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Gail Reyes Senior Center (11403 Ellenton St./U.S. 278, Barnwell). It is a free group.
The Barnwell County Diabetes Support Group will help diabetics to gain information concerning the following in self-management such as: Diabetes education, Diabetes nutrition (Eat Smarter), Exercise (Be Active), Diabetes medication, Diabetes and your emotional health (Stress Less), Blood sugars, and How to avoid diabetes burnout. In general, the Barnwell County Diabetes Support Group will help diabetics understand diabetes and why it is very important to keep diabetes under control.

The Barnwell County Cancer Support Group meets monthly on the third Thursday, unless there is a conflict with church calendar, at Elko Baptist Church.
Barnwell Lions Club
Come join the Lions Club, the largest service organization in the world. The Lions' mission is to assist needy citizens in their efforts to obtain proper vision care. Barnwell County Lions Club meets the 2nd and 4th Tuesday evening in the Fellowship Hall of the Barnwell Presbyterian Church. Dinner begins at 7 p.m. with a community related program beginning around 7:30.
