​STEM Festival in Williston

The DIG (Dreams Imagination Gifts Development Program) STEM Festival will be held Saturday, April 23 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Main Street in Williston. This free, outdoor event will provide an opportunity for engagement and exchange between children, teens, families and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) professionals in rural communities. It will showcase a multitude of exhibitors that will provide hands-on activities, live performances, interactive demonstrations and family-oriented STEM entertainment. 
 
Food Giveaway
Angel Wings Food giveaway will be Saturday, April 23 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at 150 Charles Street in Barnwell. First time applicants need a picture.
 
Prescription Drug Take-Back 
Turn in your unused and unwanted prescription medications during the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, April 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the CVS in Barnwell. This is sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Agency and Barnwell County Sheriff’s Office. Liquids and syringes will not be accepted. 
 
Canoe/Kayak Trip
South Fork of the Edisto River Canoe/Kayak River Trip will be Saturday, April 30 with launch at 9 a.m. from Claudes Landing (435 Claudes Landing Road, Denmark). Claudes Landing is on Claudes Landing Rd. off of Charleston Augusta Hwy. between Sweden on U.S. Hwy. 321 & Finland on Country Club Rd. (State Hwy. 70).
Bring your own boat & gear. Free shuttle service.

GOP District Convention
The South Carolina GOP’s Second Congressional District Convention is scheduled for Saturday, April 30 from 10 a.m. until 1 a.m. at River Bluff High School (320 Corley Mill Rd., Lexington).  Registration begins at 9 a.m. The purpose is to elect delegates and alternates to the 2016 Republican National Convention, as well as officers for the Second Congressional District.
 
Book Signing 
The Allendale County Library (292 Main Street, Allendale) is hosting a book signing for local author Andrea D. Collins and her new book, Immortal Lovers: The Ultimate Sacrifice, on Saturday, April 30 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Books will cost $12.55.

Fishing Tournament
The Lower Savannah River Alliance’s annual Savannah River Classic Fishing Tournament is May 6-7 on the Savannah River in Allendale County and Screven County, Ga. Categories include Bass, Catfish and Panfish for cash prizes. Youth, Ladies, Men’s, and Bank Fishing Divisions available. 
Registration is $25 per adult angler, $10 per bank fisherman and $10 for youth anglers (15 and under). This includes the captain’s meeting and fish dinner on May 6 at 6:30 p.m. 
They’re also teaming up with Georgia and South Carolina Wildlife Federations for a Wild Game Cook-off after the tournament. Bring your best recipe to the table and get your game on Registration for cooking teams is $25.

‘1776’ Play at Circle Theatre
‘1776 the Musical’ opens Friday, May 6 at 8 p.m. at Circle Theatre in Barnwell with additional performances May 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 at 8 p.m. Three Sunday matinees will be May 8 and 22 at 3 p.m. and May 15 at 4 p.m.  Tickets are $20 at the door, but $15 in advance.

Mother-Daughter Breakfast
The Community Uplift Program’s (C.U.P.) 2nd Annual Mother-Daughter Breakfast will be Saturday, May 7 from 9 a.m. to noon at First Baptist Church in Williston. The day includes a sit-down breakfast, motivational speaker, mother and daughter activity, and photo booth. The 2016 theme is A Reflection of Mom, A Reflection of Christ. Guest speaker is Rev. Brendolyn Jenkins-Bossman.

Confederate Memorial Day
The local camps of the Sons of Confederate Veterans will have their Confederate Memorial Day ceremonies on Saturday, May 14 at 4 p.m. at the Confederate Monument in Calhoun Park near the Courthouse. Events will include re-enactors and speakers. 
 
Blackville Music & Arts Festival
The Blackville Music and Arts Festival will be May 20-21 in downtown Blackville.

FUNDRAISERS
 
Car Wash/BBQ Plates
The Barnwell High School track and field team will hold a car wash on April 23 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the school. They will also be selling BBQ plates. This is a fundraiser for the BHS track program.

Auction and Dance
An auction and dance will be held on April 23 from 6 p.m. to midnight at El BAB Shrine Club (571 Patterson Mill Road, Barnwell) to benefit the Barnwell Warhorse Football program. There will be a live and silent auction, cash bar, catered meal, and music and dancing. Sponsorship opportunities are available. 
Tickets are $20 for individuals or $35 for couples. No one under 21 will be permitted inside. Tickets will not be sold at the door.

Warhorse Club Golf Tournament
The Barnwell Warhorse Club will host their annual golf tournament on Saturday, April 23 at 9 a.m. at Sweetwater Country Club. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Register as a four-person team early at the club or contact a board member.
 
School Playground Equipment
Barnwell County Ministerial Association will be hosting a fundraising service April 24 at 6 p.m. at Blackville Church of God, 344 Izlar Street, Blackville. Bishop George Burckhalter will be the speaker. This fundraising event is for Macedonia Elementary School’s playground equipment.
 
Chicken Dinners
The Hilda Fire Department is hosting a BBQ chicken dinner fundraiser on Saturday, April 30 at the fire station from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Proceeds are for necessary fire and medical equipment. Plates are $8. Tickets are available from any fireman or at Hilda Hardware.
 
Miss/Master Springfest Pageant
The 2016 Miss/Master Springfest “Natural” Beauty Pageant in honor of the Allendale County “Cooter” Festival will be held April 30 at the James Brandt Building, 398 Barnwell Hwy., Allendale. 
Supreme Package is $60 (Beauty, Spring Wear, hair, eyes, smile). Deadline is April 23. All applications must be turned in by this date.
Groups: Boys: 0-2, 3-5, 6-9; Girls: 0-11, 12-23, 2yr, 3, 4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-15, 16-19, 20 & up.

Boston Butts/Chicken Halves
Barnwell First Baptist Church will sell Boston butts and chicken halves grilled by Johnny Gray on May 1 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the activity center as a fundraiser for the Uganda mission trip. Cost is $25 for Boston Butts and $5 for chicken halves. Tickets are on sale now through April 24 at First Baptist.
 
Music & Arts Festival Pageant
The Blackville Music and Arts Festival Pageant is May 7 at 11 a.m. at Blackville-Hilda High auditorium. Pageant will consist of Beauty and Theme Wear. Cost is $65 and proceeds benefit the Blackville Music and Arts Festival. Winners will ride in the parade on the day of the festival on May 21.

Dean Scarbeary Memorial Tournament
The Dean Scarbeary Memorial Golf Tournament for Charity will be Saturday, May 7 at 10 a.m. at Sweetwater Country Club in Barnwell. The tournament is named after Dean Scarbeary, a Swiss Krono employee who died in 2014 in a house fire. This year’s funds will be donated to Ashleigh Place Girls Home in Blackville. 
Cost is $75 for individuals or $300 for a team. It includes green fees, carts, snacks, beverages, one raffle ticket, three mulligans and lunch. Sign in will be at 9 a.m. Deadline is May 1.

Bingo/Dinner
Barnwell Academy will have Bingo and dinner on Friday, May 13 from 5 to 8 p.m. Game and door prizes will be awarded. Cost is $2/card. Hot dog dinners and pizza will be sold.

Team Zeta Golf Tournament
The 7th Annual Team Zeta golf tournament will be Saturday, May 14 at Sweetwater Country Club in Barnwell to honor and remember the life of Zeta Christian Brabham. Team Zeta helps special needs families in the surrounding community. The recipient of this year’s tournament will be Arkeim Jacobs, a senior athlete who was nasopharyngeal cancer. 
Hole ($50) and event ($250) sponsorships are being offered. Deadline is May 5.

Allendale County School Board
The Allendale County School Board will hold their regular meeting Monday, April 25 with closed session at 6 p.m. followed by open meeting at 7 p.m. in the Allendale-Fairfax High multi-purpose room. Another special meeting will be held April 28 at 6 p.m. for a budget work session in the district office. 
 
Allendale County Council
Allendale County Council Meeting will meet Thursday, April 21 at 6:30 p.m. at the J.W. Wall, Jr.’s Council Chambers at the Allendale County Courthouse.

Knopf Family Reunion
The descendants of William Henry Knopf and Idoma Grainger Knopf Creech will hold their annual family reunion on May 21 at Friendship Baptist Church Activities Building from 10 a.m. until.
Bring a covered dish, drinks or tea, and a dessert. All eating utensils and plates and cups will be furnished.
