Prescription Drug Take-Back
Turn in your unused and unwanted prescription medications during the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, April 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the CVS in Barnwell. This is sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Agency and Barnwell County Sheriff’s Office. Liquids and syringes will not be accepted.
South Fork of the Edisto River Canoe/Kayak River Trip will be Saturday, April 30 with launch at 9 a.m. from Claudes Landing (435 Claudes Landing Road, Denmark). Claudes Landing is on Claudes Landing Rd. off of Charleston Augusta Hwy. between Sweden on U.S. Hwy. 321 & Finland on Country Club Rd. (State Hwy. 70).

GOP Congressional Convention
The South Carolina GOP’s Second Congressional District Convention is scheduled for Saturday, April 30 from 10 a.m. until 1 a.m. at River Bluff High School (320 Corley Mill Rd., Lexington). Registration begins at 9 a.m. The purpose is to elect delegates and alternates to the 2016 Republican National Convention, as well as officers for the Second Congressional District.
The Allendale County Library (292 Main Street, Allendale) is hosting a book signing for local author Andrea D. Collins and her new book, Immortal Lovers: The Ultimate Sacrifice, on Saturday, April 30 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Books will cost $12.55.

HIV/AIDS Awareness Lunch
Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church’s Health and Wellness Ministry cordially invites the community to attend a HIV/AIDS Awareness Luncheon to explore the rise of HIV/AIDS epidemic in South Carolina. This free event will be April 30 at 11 a.m. at the church, 4830 Jones Bridge Road, Blackville. The program will consist of the viewing of the Documentary “Wilhelmina’s War” and guest speaker Maria Flickland, founder & CEO of Michelle’s Kids, a nonprofit HIV/AIDS organization.

The Small Business Development Center at S.C. Day of Prayer
Barnwell County’s Day of Prayer will be May 5 at noon at the courthouse Sundial. The Barnwell County Ministerial Association would love to have as many people there to pray as possible. They will pray for the town, county, state and country.
Cooter Fest Fish Fry
The Allendale County Democratic Party will host the Cooter Fest Kick-off Fish Fry on Thursday, May 5 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Allendale Community Center (downtown Flat Street, Allendale). Cost is a $10 donation per dinner. Menu: Golden Fried Fish, Carolina Baked Beans, Cole Slaw, Bread, Slice of Homemade Cake, Drink. Walk-ins are welcomed, but patrons are urged to purchase tickets in advance. Tickets are available until May 4 from any member of the Allendale County Democratic Party.

The Lower Savannah River Alliance’s annual Savannah River Classic Fishing Tournament is May 6-7 on the Savannah River in Allendale County and Screven County, Ga. Categories include Bass, Catfish and Panfish for cash prizes. Youth, Ladies, Men’s, and Bank Fishing Divisions available.
Registration is $25 per adult angler, $10 per bank fisherman and $10 for youth anglers (15 and under). This includes the captain’s meeting and fish dinner on May 6 at 6:30 p.m.
They’re also teaming up with Georgia and South Carolina Wildlife Federations for a Wild Game Cook-off after the tournament. Bring your best recipe to the table and get your game on Registration for cooking teams is $25.

‘1776’ Play at Circle Theatre
‘1776 the Musical’ opens Friday, May 6 at 8 p.m. at Circle Theatre in Barnwell with additional performances May 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 at 8 p.m. Three Sunday matinees will be May 8 and 22 at 3 p.m. and May 15 at 4 p.m. Tickets are $20 at the door, but $15 in advance.

The Community Uplift Program’s (C.U.P.) 2nd Annual Mother-Daughter Breakfast will be Saturday, May 7 from 9 a.m. to noon at First Baptist Church in Williston. The day includes a sit-down breakfast, motivational speaker, mother and daughter activity, and photo booth. The 2016 theme is A Reflection of Mom, A Reflection of Christ. Guest speaker is Rev. Brendolyn Jenkins-Bossman.

Confederate Memorial Day
The local camps of the Sons of Confederate Veterans will have their Confederate Memorial Day ceremonies on Saturday, May 14 at 4 p.m. at the Confederate Monument in Calhoun Park near the Courthouse. Events will include re-enactors and speakers.
The bands of Bamberg School District 1 and their band booster club will hold a jazz gala will be held Saturday, May 14 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bamberg First Baptist social hall. The theme is “Jazz Through the Decades: How the Roaring 20’s helped shape jazz!” Tickets are $15 each. Sponsorships are $100. Includes a catered meal and music by BEHS Jazz Band.

Revolutionary War Exhibit
Opening May 6 at the Barnwell County Museum, The American Revolutionary War in South Carolina, a South Carolina State Museum Traveling Exhibit, will feature some of Barnwell District’s once forgotten local heroes and heroines. Discover lost stories, war sites and Barnwell District’s role in winning the war to free America from the rule of the Monarchy.
On Saturday, May 14 from 1 to 4 p.m. the Barnwell County Museum will host a full afternoon of Revolutionary War exhibits, speakers, genealogy, and much more. Admission is free. Enjoy a Colonial Era Buffet Supper from 5 to 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 and must be purchased in advance at Evelyn’s or the Barnwell County Museum, 617 Hagood Avenue, Barnwell.

Rivers Bridge Event
The 140th Rivers Bridge Confederate Memorial Day celebration will be May 13 at Rivers Bridge Historic Site State Park in Ehrhardt. Music starts at 10 a.m. with the program at 11 a.m.

BBQ Chicken Dinner
The Hilda Fire Department is hosting a BBQ chicken dinner fundraiser on Saturday, April 30 at the fire station from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Proceeds are for necessary fire and medical equipment. Plates are $8. Tickets are available from any fireman or at Hilda Hardware.

Carslisle St.) in Bamberg, May 12 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Bamberg-Ehrhardt High School (267 Red Raider Ave.) in Bamberg, and May 6 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Barnwell High School (474 Jackson St.) in Barnwell.
Day of Service
On Thursday, May 5, United Way is celebrating Cinco de Mayo by asking the community to LIVE UNITED by participating in a work place or school fundraising campaign. Businesses are asked to consider giving a portion of proceeds as a donation to benefit United Way agencies. Local schools are coming up with creative fundraising ideas and having competitions among schools in each district.
They encourage everyone to do something: cut someone’s grass, pick up litter on your street, read to a child, take some groceries to the food bank, or sign up to deliver meals to a shut-in.

Music & Arts Festival Pageant
The Blackville Music and Arts Festival Pageant is May 7 at 11 a.m. at Blackville-Hilda High auditorium. Pageant will consist of Beauty and Theme Wear. Cost is $65 and proceeds benefit the Blackville Music and Arts Festival. Winners will ride in the parade on the day of the festival on May 21.

Dean Scarbeary Memorial Golf
The Dean Scarbeary Memorial Golf Tournament for Charity will be Saturday, May 7 at 10 a.m. at Sweetwater Country Club in Barnwell. The tournament is named after Dean Scarbeary, a Swiss Krono employee who died in 2014 in a house fire. This year’s funds will be donated to Ashleigh Place Girls Home in Blackville.
Cost is $75 for individuals or $300 for a team. It includes green fees, carts, snacks, beverages, one raffle ticket, three mulligans and lunch. Sign in will be at 9 a.m. Deadline is May 1.

Team Zeta Golf Tournament
The 7th Annual Team Zeta golf tournament will be Saturday, May 14 at Sweetwater Country Club in Barnwell to honor and remember the life of Zeta Christian Brabham. Team Zeta helps special needs families in the surrounding community. The recipient of this year’s tournament will be Arkeim Jacobs, a senior athlete who was nasopharyngeal cancer.
Hole ($50) and event ($250) sponsorships are being offered. Deadline is May 5.

The Blackville-Hilda Teacher Forum will hold the District Teacher of the Year Gala on Saturday, May 14 at the Blackville Community Center at 6 p.m.
May Fest at Barnwell Primary
Barnwell Primary School will hold May Fest on Monday, May 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. on the playground (gym in the event it rains). The event will celebrate spring with May Day traditions, chorus performance, Kentucky Derby hat parade and contest, line dancing, popcorn and snow cones.
Kelly Edwards 5K Registration
5K registration at Kelly Edwards Elementary will be held from May 9-13. Please bring the following information: South Carolina Immunization Record (required), Official Birth Certificate (required), two Required Proofs of Residency (required), and a Social Security Card (not required). One of the proofs of residency must be a Current Tax Notice or Lease/Mortgage Agreement and the other item can be any proof that shows a physical address such as but not limited to the following: Current power bill, water bill, satellite/cable bill, automobile tax/automobile registration card. Your child must be 5 on or before Sept. 1, 2016 to register for 5-year-old kindergarten.

Allendale County School Board
The Allendale County School Board will hold a special meeting April 28 at 6 p.m. for a budget work session in the district office.
The annual Dunbarton Reunion will be Sunday, May 1 at Barnwell State Park Community Building. Dunbarton was one of the towns and communities that were dissolved to make way for the Savannah River Site in the 1950s. Doors open at noon with a barbecue dinner beginning at 1 p.m. Cost is $10 per plate.

The descendants of William Henry Knopf and Idoma Grainger Knopf Creech will hold their annual family reunion on May 21 at Friendship Baptist Church Activities Building from 10 a.m. until.
