National Day of Prayer
Barnwell: Barnwell County’s Day of Prayer will be May 5 at noon at the courthouse Sundial. The Barnwell County Ministerial Association would love to have as many people there to pray as possible. They will be praying for the town, county, state, and country. 
Blackville: A National Day of Prayer service will be held Thursday, May 5 at 6 p.m. at the Blackville Community Center. 
 
‘1776’ Musical at Circle Theatre
‘1776 the Musical’ opens Friday, May 6 at 8 p.m. at Circle Theatre in Barnwell with additional performances May 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 at 8 p.m. Three Sunday matinees will be May 8 and 22 at 3 p.m. and May 15 at 4 p.m.  Tickets are $20 at the door, but $15 in advance.  
Season ticket holders can call the theatre at (803) 259-7046 to leave a message with reservation info. Tickets for non-season ticket holders are available at Evelyn’s Jewelry in downtown Barnwell or online at http://ctbarnwell.bpt.me (small service fee added on).
 
Mother-Daughter Breakfast
The Community Uplift Program’s (C.U.P.) 2nd Annual Mother-Daughter Breakfast will be Saturday, May 7 from 9 a.m. to noon at First Baptist Church in Williston. The day includes a sit-down breakfast, motivational speaker, mother and daughter activity, and photo booth. The 2016 theme is A Reflection of Mom, A Reflection of Christ. Guest speaker is Rev. Brendolyn Jenkins-Bossman.

The Beaufort County Black Chamber of Commerce has scheduled the following classes to be held in May at the chamber office at 801 Bladen Street beginning at 6 p.m.: Tuesday, May 10 – Creating a Budget and Getting Out of Debt; Tuesday, May 24 – Credit Repair; Thursday, May 26 – First Time Homebuyer Seminar

Fishing Rodeo
The annual free Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs Fishing Rodeo will be Saturday, May 14 from 8 a.m. until noon at the fish hatchery on Dunbarton Boulevard beside Fuller Park. Ages 13 and under should be accompanied by an adult. Bring your own poles (no reels). Bait will be provided but you can bring your own. No adult fishing. There will be free hot dogs and drinks as well as prizes. Event is handicap accessible. 
It is sponsored by SC Department of Natural Resources, Harry Hampton Memorial Wildlife Fund, Barnwell County Chamber of Commerce and Academy Sports.

Confederate Memorial Day
The local camps of the Sons of Confederate Veterans will have their Confederate Memorial Day ceremonies on Saturday, May 14 at 4 p.m. at the Confederate Monument in Calhoun Park near the Courthouse. Events will include re-enactors and speakers. 
 
Jazz Gala
The bands of Bamberg School District 1 and their band booster club will hold a jazz gala will be held Saturday, May 14 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bamberg First Baptist social hall. The theme is “Jazz Through the Decades: How the Roaring 20’s helped shape jazz!” Tickets are $15 each. Sponsorships are $100. Includes a catered meal and music by BEHS Jazz Band.

Revolutionary War Exhibit
Opening May 6 at the Barnwell County Museum, The American Revolutionary War in South Carolina, a South Carolina State Museum Traveling Exhibit, will feature some of Barnwell District’s once forgotten local heroes and heroines. Discover lost stories, war sites and Barnwell District’s role in winning the war to free America from the rule of the Monarchy.
On Saturday, May 14 from 1 to 4 p.m. the Barnwell County Museum will host a full afternoon of Revolutionary War exhibits, speakers, genealogy, and much more. Admission is free. Enjoy a Colonial Era Buffet Supper from 5 to 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 and must be purchased in advance at Evelyn’s or the Barnwell County Museum, 617 Hagood Avenue, Barnwell.

Confederate Memorial Day 
The 140th Rivers Bridge Confederate Memorial Day celebration will be May 13 at Rivers Bridge Historic Site State Park in Ehrhardt. Music starts at 10 a.m. with the program at 11 a.m. 
 
Pastor’s Retirement Reception
Williston United Methodist Church will hold a retirement reception for Pastor Cindy Fuller on Sunday, May 15 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the church, located at 6030 Springfield Road, Williston. RSVP to willistonumc@tds.net.
 
Free Senior Breakfast
Pastor Pamela Richards of Beulah Baptist Church, Beldoc, will host another senior’s breakfast at Hardee’s in Allendale on May 17 from 7:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. Sign up will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Republican Party Dinner
The Barnwell County Republican Party is having a dinner meeting on Tuesday, May 17 at the Barnwell County Career Center, 5214 Reynolds Rd., Blackville. The event begins at 6:30 pm, and a catered meal will be served. All the Republican candidates who are running for office in the June 14th primary, and the November 8th, Presidential election, have been invited to speak. The cost is $10 per person.
 
Blackville Music and Arts Festival
The Blackville Music and Arts Festival will be May 20-21 in downtown Blackville.

Blackville Alumni Member Drive
The Blackville Public Schools Alumni Association, Inc. will conduct a membership drive during the Blackville Music & Arts Festival on May 20 and 21.
 
Elko Farmers Market
Vendor applications are being accepted for the 2016 season. Farmers, market gardeners, crafters and home bakers are invited to join the market. This year’s opening day is Saturday, May 21, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The market will open every Saturday (weather permitting) until mid-fall, and is located across from the post office, on Hwy 78 in Elko.

Angel Wings food giveaway will take place at 150 Charles Street in Barnwell on Saturday, May 28 from 9 to 11 a.m. First time applicants need a picture ID.

Youth Empowerment Camp
Trinity Outreach Ministries will hold a youth empowerment camp June 6-30 and July5-August 4 from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily. Extended hours are available. Spaces are limited. Includes scholastic hands-on activities, breakfast and lunch, field trips and academic enrichment.

Teen Job Readiness Training 
The Teen Job Readiness Training program is enrolling teens ages 14-17 in Barnwell, Allendale and Bamberg counties for the summer 2016 session. Parent orientation will be June 8. The session begins June 13 and ends July 22 with internships June 20-22. Deadline to apply is May 20. Teens will earn work experience while getting paid $7.25 per hour to attend training sessions and at their internship assignment.

Blood Drives
The American Red Cross will hold blood drives in Allendale, Barnwell and Bamberg counties in May: May 4 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Allendale-Fairfax High School (Highway 278 West) in Fairfax, May 5 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Job Corps Bamberg (200 S. Carslisle St.) in Bamberg, May 12 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Bamberg-Ehrhardt High School (267 Red Raider Ave.) in Bamberg, and May 6 from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Barnwell High School (474 Jackson St.) in Barnwell. 
 
Day of Giving
On Thursday, May 5, United Way is celebrating Cinco de Mayo by asking the community to LIVE UNITED by participating in a work place or school fundraising campaign. Businesses are asked to consider giving a portion of proceeds as a donation to benefit United Way agencies. Local schools are coming up with creative fundraising ideas and having competitions among schools in each district. 
We would like to encourage everyone to do something: cut someone’s grass, pick up litter on your street, read to a child, take some groceries to the food bank, or sign up to deliver meals to a shut-in.

Plant Sale
The Ivy Garden Club will have the following items for sale at the annual Mother’s Day Plant Sale: fairy gardens, hanging baskets, gift baskets, gifts, daylilies, lipstick sage, swamp sunflowers, walking iris, and much more. The sale will take place on Saturday, May 7 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the corner of Main and Elko streets in Williston.
 
Barbecue  
On Saturday, May 7, Brickyard Lodge #55 will be in the IGA parking lot in Barnwell selling barbecue ribs, chicken, and pulled pork sandwiches starting at 11 a.m. 
 
Music and Arts Pageant
The Blackville Music and Arts Festival Pageant is May 7 at 11 a.m. at Blackville-Hilda High auditorium. Pageant will consist of Beauty and Theme Wear. Cost is $65 and proceeds benefit the Blackville Music and Arts Festival. Winners will ride in the parade on the day of the festival on May 21.

Bingo / Dinner
Barnwell Academy will have Bingo and dinner on Friday, May 13 from 5 to 8 p.m. Game and door prizes will be awarded. Cost is $2/card. Hot dog dinners and pizza will be sold.

Car Wash
The Barnwell County Animal Shelter Foundation with the generous help of Barnwell County Beta Clubs will have a free car wash fundraiser on Saturday, May 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Bethany Baptist parking lot on Dunbarton Boulevard beside CVS. Donations are accepted and appreciated. There will also be a meatball hoagie and dessert bake sale. Funds raised will help purchase a newer vehicle to be used for rescue transportation.
 
Team Zeta Golf Tournament
The 7th Annual Team Zeta golf tournament will be Saturday, May 14 at Sweetwater Country Club in Barnwell to honor and remember the life of Zeta Christian Brabham. Team Zeta helps special needs families in the surrounding community. The recipient of this year’s tournament will be Arkeim Jacobs, a senior athlete who was nasopharyngeal cancer. 
Hole ($50) and event ($250) sponsorships are being offered. Deadline is May 5.

Kelly Edwards 5K Registration
5K registration at Kelly Edwards Elementary will be held from May 9-13.  Please bring the following information: South Carolina Immunization Record (required), Official Birth Certificate (required), two Required Proofs of Residency (required), and a Social Security Card (not required). One of the proofs of residency must be a Current Tax Notice or Lease/Mortgage Agreement and the other item can be any proof that shows a physical address such as but not limited to the following: Current power bill, water bill, satellite/cable bill, automobile tax/automobile registration card. Your child must be 5 on or before Sept. 1, 2016 to register for 5-year-old kindergarten.   
 
Belcher Scholarship
The Barnwell County Arts Council is accepting applications for the Jean Orr Belcher Scholarship. This one time, $500 scholarship will be awarded to a Barnwell County student who plans to pursue a career in the arts.

The Barnwell District 45 Band Booster Club will hold its monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 10 at 6:30 p.m. in the Barnwell High School band room.
 
Barnwell First Steps Board
The Barnwell County First Steps Board of Directors will hold their monthly meeting on May 12 at 5:30 p.m. at the Blackville Municipal Building, located at 5997 Lartigue Street, Blackville.
 
Allendale County School Board
The Allendale County School Board will hold a special-called meeting on Tuesday, May 17 at 6 p.m. for a budget work session at the district office in Fairfax.
 
 
SPORTS
 
Black Top Battle
The City of Barnwell Parks and Recreation Department will sponsor a Black Top Battle on Saturday, May 14 at Fuller Park basketball courts. Tip-off is at 5 p.m. Team registration is underway at Barnwell City Hall for $60 or at the park on game day for $70. This is for ages 15 and up. Event is free to spectators.

Knopf Family
The descendants of William Henry Knopf and Idoma Grainger Knopf Creech will hold their annual family reunion on May 21 at Friendship Baptist Church Activities Building from 10 a.m. until.
Bring a covered dish, drinks or tea, and a dessert. All eating utensils and plates and cups will be furnished.
Also bring any photos of the past generations as well as memories to share with the younger generations.
