Allendale First Friday

The First Friday Committee and Town of Allendale presents Allendale First Friday every first Friday from July to October. The next event is Friday, August 5 from 3-10 p.m. at the Allendale Community Center and Farmers Market. Bring a lawn chair. BINGO starts at 3 p.m. with gospel music at 5, Zumba at 6 and entertainment from 6-10 p.m. Vendors are welcome.

Youth Empowerment Expo

Mt. Calvary Women’s Auxiliary will host their second annual Youth Empowerment Expo at Denmark-Olar High gymnasium on Saturday, August 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. There will be dynamic music, singing, praise dancing, gospel rap and poetry. All youth are invited to this free event.

Tax-Free Shopping

South Carolina’s Sales Tax Holiday weekend is less than one month away. From Friday, August 5 through Sunday, August 7, South Carolina shoppers can purchase a number of back-to-school items tax free.

For one weekend every summer, specific items are exempt from the 6% state sales tax and any applicable local sales taxes. Some of the tax free items include paper, notebooks, pens and pencils, book bags, computers, clothing, shoes, bed linens, and bath towels.

Family Fishing Clinic

A family fishing clinic will be held August 6 from 1-4 p.m. at Barnwell State Park (shelter 4). Clinics are designed to introduce the basics of fishing to the young and old. Learn how to tie fishing knows, rig rods, cast, fish and more.

Back-to-School Bashes

•Greater Faith Ministries, located at 179 Calhoun Street in Barnwell, will be sponsoring their Back to School Bash along with Health Awareness on August 6 from 10 a.m. to noon. Children must come with an adult.

•Second Baptist Church of Barnwell (181 Church Street, Barnwell) will hold a back-to-school bash on Saturday, August 6 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be free school supplies, food, waterslide, bounce house and information booths.

•The Third Annual Unity in the Community Back to School Bash will be held Sunday, August 7 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Williston-Elko High School. Prayer at the flag pole will be held at 3:45 p.m. There will be popcorn, snow cones, fellowship, school supplies and fun. Event is sponsored by the W-E CommUNITY Coalition.

•Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church Youth Department will host their 4th Annual Back to School Bash (School Supplies Give-A-Way) on Saturday, August 13 from 3-6 p.m. at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, 4830 Jones Bridge Road, Blackville.

•Each One Reach One will hold its inaugural Blackville Community Unity Day Back-to-School Drive on August 20 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A location has not been announced. There will be bounce houses, music, dance contest, and free haircuts for boys and hairdos for girls. Children can wear their bathing suits because a fire truck will be there to provide water play. Light refreshments will be served. School supplies will be given away.

They are seeking donations of notebook paper, loose-leaf paper, scissors, crayons, pencils, pens, backpacks, hand sanitizer, etc. To donate, contact Shaneka Deloach at (803) 571-3170.

Senior Center Open House

Are you a senior citizen age 60 and up? The Blackville Senior Center (old country club at 59 Callahan Circle, Blackville) will have open house on August 10 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Come take a tour and hear what they offer. Light refreshments will be served.

Coffee with a Cop

The next Coffee with a Cop event is August 13 at 9 a.m. at McDonald’s in Barnwell (10405 Dunbarton Boulevard). Join your neighbors and police officers for coffee and conversation. There is no agenda or speeches, just a chance to ask questions, voice concerns and get to know the officers in your neighborhood.

YMCA Movie Night

The Barnwell County YMCA (660 Joey Zorn Boulevard, Barnwell) will conclude the summer movie series on the lawn on August 13. Movie starts at dusk. Movie is free to YMCA members and their guests. Bring chairs and a blanket.

Nursing Home Volunteers

Pruitt Health Barnwell is looking for volunteers to share their talent or time with our residents. There are opportunities for visiting with residents, pet visits, games, crafts, helping with special events, playing the piano, answering phones, etc. Groups are also welcome to share their talents. There are many different opportunities to bring a smile to someone’s face. You can volunteer as little as one hour a month, to a couple hours a week.

‘Paper Power’ Drive

Kelly Edwards Elementary School PTO in Williston is sponsoring a “Paper Power” drive during registration Aug. 3-4 and the Meet and Greet event Aug. 11. Parents/guardians are asked to donate a ream(s) of copy paper in exchange for a chance to win a $10 gift card. Parents will receive another chance to win by signing up for the PTO.

JDA Yard Sale

Jefferson Davis Academy is having a school-wide yard sale on Saturday, August 6 to kick off PTO fundraising for the 2016-17 school year. All JDA families who have large or small items are asked to participate. Tables will be set up in front of the school. Cost is $25 per table. Any donation of sales to the JDA PTO is appreciated.

Band Camp Donations

The Barnwell Scarlet Knights are in need of donations of fruit, water and powdered Gatorade for band camp this year to help ensure the children stay hydrated in the intense heat while they practice. Camp goes through August 11.

Kelly Edwards Elementary School

Registration for new and returning students will be held on August 3 from 8 a.m. to noon and August 4 from 3 to 7 p.m. at Kelly Edwards Elementary. All students arerequired to complete the registration form and the McKinney Vento form.

New students must have the following: S.C. Immunization Record (required), Official Birth Certificate (required) and a Social Security Card. You must also present two required Proofs of Residency - One must be a Current Tax Notice or Lease/Mortgage Agreement and the other can be any bill that shows a physical address such as but not limited to the following: Current power bill, water bill, satellite/cable bill, automobile tax/automobile registration card.

Barnwell Elementary School

Please stop by Barnwell Elementary School to register your child/children for the 2016-17 school year during the following times: Monday through Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. There will be no registration fees for the 2016-17 school year. If you have not picked up your child’s report card for the 2015-16 school year, please stop by the main office.

Barnwell High School

Barnwell High will have registration on the following days from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. by class: juniors on Wednesday, August 3, and seniors on Thursday, August 4.

Parking fees ($25) and outstanding balances may be paid at this time. All fees must be paid in order to park on campus. Freshmen are not allowed to drive to school. Seniors have the option to personalize their parking space for an additional $25. Fees must be paid with cash or money order.

Students new to District 45 can register on Aug. 3-4.

Barnwell Academy

Barnwell Academy has ongoing registration for the 2016-2017 school year every Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. They offer preschool programs for 3 and 4 year olds and kindergarten through 6th grade.

•Maker Camp (ages 7-12): Hands-on learning experience involving making, creating, crafting, hacking, tinkering and discovery. Foster Parent Info Session

SC MENTOR is having a Foster Parent Information Session on Wednesday, August 17 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at 5140 Woodside Executive Court, Aiken. Individuals or couples interested in learning more about becoming therapeutic foster parents are invited to attend. Registration is required.

Allendale County Council’s regular meeting is scheduled on Thursday, August 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the J.W. Wall Jr.’s Council Chambers at the Allendale County Courthouse.

CODA Training

Citizens Opposed to Domestic Violence (CODA) will hold volunteer training beginning August 20. Training hours will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on August 20 and August 21-23 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. All four sessions must be completed prior to beginning volunteer activities.

CODA volunteers will be trained in working with victims of domestic violence, answering the 24-hour crisis line, and a variety of activities working either on site in CODA’s offices and/or the shelter, or at various community events as representatives of CODA. Applicants must pre-register and an interview is necessary prior to the start of training.

Barnwell High 1970s Reunion

All graduates of Barnwell High School between 1970 and 1979 are invited to Sweetwater Country Club for a reunion on August 20 at 7 p.m.
