Each One Reach One will hold its inaugural Blackville Community Unity Day Back-to-School Drive on August 20 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Maloney Field in Blackville. There will be bounce houses, music, dance contest, and free haircuts for boys and hairdos for girls. Children can wear their bathing suits because a fire truck will be there to provide water play. Light refreshments will be served. School supplies will be given away.
They are seeking donations of notebook paper, loose-leaf paper, scissors, crayons, pencils, pens, backpacks, hand sanitizer, etc.

Strengthening Families Program
Parents and children are invited to participate in a series of interactive and fun family nights out. This 14-week Strengthening Families program will be held weekly at 5:30 p.m. on Monday between August 22 and Nov. 21. Program takes place at Greater Faith Ministries, 170 Calhoun Street, Barnwell. Learn how to prevent behavior problems, build stronger relationships and manage stress. Sessions begin with dinner. There is a chance to win gas and Visa cards. There is also free childcare and transportation as needed.

Touch an Animal Day
The University of Georgia Savannah River Ecology Laboratory will sponsor Touch An Animal Day on Saturday, Aug. 20 from 9 a.m.to noon at the UGA SREL Conference Center, Highway 278, approximately 17 miles southeast of Aiken. This free event will give attendees of all ages the opportunity to see, touch and learn about animals and plants native to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site and the surrounding communities. SREL graduate students will present research posters on topics ranging from the impacts of coal energy on wildlife to managing wild pig populations. An edible plant display will provide unique and delightful tastings.
Domestic Violence Training
Citizens Opposed to Domestic Violence (CODA) will hold volunteer training beginning August 20. Training hours will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on August 20 and will continue August 21, 22, and 23 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. All four sessions must be completed prior to beginning volunteer activities.
CODA volunteers will be trained in working with victims of domestic violence, answering the 24-hour crisis line, and a variety of activities working either on site in CODA’s offices and/or the shelter, or at various community events as representatives of CODA. Applicants must pre-register and an interview is necessary prior to the start of training.

State Park Events
On August 27, join a park ranger at the Barnwell State Park for a Sunset Hike on the Dogwood Trail. Wear comfortable shoes, bring drinking water and a flashlight. Meet at the office at 8 p.m.
This Labor Day Weekend the park will have a Slithery Snake Program on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. You will learn about the common native venomous and non-venomous snakes of South Carolina. You might even get a chance to hold Herbert, the park’s Hognose Snake.

Infant Mortality Awareness Lunch
The 9th Annual Infant Mortality Awareness Luncheon hosted by Family Solutions of the Low Country will take place on Friday, Sept. 9 at noon at the Family Christian Life Center/ Edisto Fork United Methodist Church, Hwy. 301 South, Orangeburg. The keynote speaker is Dr. Maya Rockeymoore, President and CEO of Global Policy Solutions. The purpose of this event is to bring awareness to infant mortality in our state and more intimately, our community. They serve Orangeburg, Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, and Hampton counties.

Elvis Dinner Show
Jason Sykes will perform as Elvis during a dinner show on Saturday, September 10 from 7-10 p.m. at the El BAB Shrine Club (Patterson Mill Road, Barnwell). Dinner will be served at 7 p.m.

Shrine Club Biker Bash
The El BAB Shrine Club is hosting its 19th Annual Biker Bash to support Shriner Hospitals for Children on Saturday, Aug. 20. Fee is $15 per rider, $10 per passenger which includes poker hand and meal at end of ride. First bike out at 10 a.m. at El BAB Shrine Club, 571 Patterson Mill Road, Barnwell. Allendale Arts Council Play
The Allendale County Arts Council in conjunction with USC Salkehatchie will present “Cinderella in the Kingdom of Allendale” on Saturday, August 20 at 7 p.m. at the Carolina Theater in Allendale (301 N. Main Street). This play, which was the idea of arts council chairwoman Lottie Lewis, will highlight seven wishes for Allendale to improve in certain area, such as education, agriculture, arts, crime, housing, economic development and health/wellness. Local community members are acting in the play.
Tickets are $5 in advance or $7 at the door. Funds will help the arts council do more plays in the future.

Nursing Home Volunteers
Pruitt Health Barnwell is looking for volunteers to share their talent or time with our residents. There are opportunities for visiting with residents, pet visits, games, crafts, helping with special events, playing the piano, answering phones, etc. Groups are also welcome to share their talents. There are many different opportunities to bring a smile to someone’s face. You can volunteer as little as one hour a month, to a couple hours a week.

The 9th Annual Steve Kodman Memorial Golf Tournament to benefit the Child Advocacy Center will be held Monday, August 29 at the Woodside Plantation Country Club in Aiken. Registration starts at 8 a.m. with shotgun start at 9 a.m. Fee is $100/person or $400/team. Style is captain’s choice. Allendale County Council will meet on Thursday, August 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the J.W. Wall Jr.’s Council Chambers at the Allendale County Courthouse.
Allendale County School Board
Allendale County School Board will meet Monday, Aug. 22 at 6 p.m. at the Allendale-Fairfax High multi-purpose room. The board will enter into closed session from 6-7 p.m. to discuss personnel and contractual matters. Public portion starts at 7 p.m.
Allendale Public Forum
The Promise Zone Action Team in Allendale County will host a public forum on Thursday, Sept. 8 at 6:30 p.m. in the Brandt Building on Highway 278 in Allendale. The purpose is to discuss the potential redevelopment of the old Allendale Elementary complex (former CV Bing High School) into a recreation and health/wellness facility.
Barnwell High 1970s Reunion
All graduates of Barnwell High School between 1970 and 1979 are invited to Sweetwater Country Club for a reunion on August 20 at 7 p.m.

Barnwell Soccer Club
Barnwell Soccer Club registration is currently underway. This year there are two ways to register, including online at www.sc-barnwellsc.affinitysoccer.com. You can also register in person at the Barnwell County Library with a club representative on Thursday, August 18 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. – the final date to register.
Birth certificate is required for registration. Prices for this year are: $50 for U-6, $70 for U-10 and $70 for U-14.

Blackville Recreation Football
Registration for Blackville Recreation Football (ages 6-12) is underway through the first week of September at town hall. Fee is $30 per registrant. Birth certificates are required.
