Deputy, canine headed to National Detector Trials
The Barnwell County Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce that Barnwell County deputy Elizabeth Schumpert and her canine “Ruby” came in first place on Feb. 11 at the Narcotic Detection Certifications conducted by the U.S. Police Canine Association (Region 2).
They earned a near-perfect score of 199.67 of 200 competing against canines from South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee. The certification requires the handlers and canines to be graded and timed on vehicle and building searches.
Deputy Schumpert and Ruby will go on to compete in the Nationals to be held in Raleigh, N.C. in April.
Since acquiring Ruby through the South Carolina Department of Public Safety Jag Grant, Sheriff Ed Carroll advises she has continued to improve her performance with the dedicated time and training required by her handler, Deputy Schumpert.
