National Day of Prayer

A National Day of Prayer event will be held around the Sundial in downtown Barnwell on Thursday, May 4 at noon. Another event will be held that evening at 5 p.m. at the Blackville Community Center.

Free Concert in Williston

The Williston Museum is holding a free outdoor concert on Saturday, May 6 at 2 p.m. featuring Don Goldman’s “Bear and Friends” band. They will play a variety of music. Bring your own lawn chair.

Agatha Christie Play

Who killed Richard Warwick?

Come to Circle Theatre of Barnwell to find out as they produce Agatha Christie’s murder mystery play “The Unexpected Guest” the first two weekends in May: May 5, 6, 12 and 13 at 8 p.m. with matinees on May 7 and 14 at 3 p.m.

The audience is invited to play along and try to figure out who is the murderer. A vote will be taken at intermission. A drawing of all correct answers will be held at the end for one person to win a season ticket to next season’s plays.

Tickets are $12 in advance and can be purchased at Evelyn’s in Barnwell or Tickets at the door are $15.

Scholarship Program

The Greater Rome Foundation will have their Scholarship Program on May 6 at 5 p.m. at Rome Baptist Church (544 Mimosa St., Denmark).

Confederate Memorial Day

The South Carolina 17th Regiment Camp #2069, Sons of Confederate Veterans (Hilda Camp) will have their Confederate Memorial Day ceremonies on Saturday, May 6 at 3 p.m. at the Confederate Monument in Calhoun Park near the Courthouse. Events will include reenactors, speakers, and ceremonies of remembrance of our Confederate ancestors.

Fashion Show

The Work the Runway Fashion Show, which is powered by the I Am I.S.A.A.C. Foundation, will be May 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Blackville Community Center (19464 Solomon Blatt Ave., Blackville). This event will be held to show high school students the appropriate attire to wear to those interviews, as well as a brief discussion on the Do’s and Don’ts during the interview process, and strategies to tackle the “difficult” interview questions from the interviewer.

Fishing Derby

The City of Barnwell’s Parks and Recreation is hosting a fishing derby on Saturday, May 13 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lake Edgar Brown. Cost is $20/person. All participants must pre-register before fishing. This is for shore anglers only. There are 15 tagged fish with one grand prize winner.

Fishing Rodeo

DNR’s annual Fishing Rodeo will be held Saturday, May 13 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Barnwell Fish Hatchery (10095 Dunbarton Boulevard) behind the DNR office. Anyone 13 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Bring your own pole (no reels). Bail will be provided. No adult fishing. Prizes will be awarded. Free hotdogs and drinks available. Event is handicap accessible.

Mothers Arise Workshop

Mt. Everest Worship Center will host Mothers Arise Workshop on Saturday, May 13 at the Barnwell County Library’s Community Room. Workshop time is from 11 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.

This workshop is for mothers with minor children from toddlers to teenagers who may feel frustrated and uncertain at times while raising their children. It is designed to encourage and uplift mothers while providing insightful information to help in the process. There will be various workshop topics, giveaways, lunch, and door prizes. The event is free but seating is limited.

Financial Workshop

A Managing My Money financial workshop will be held May 16 at the Barnwell County Health Dept. (11015 Ellenton St., Barnwell) by several sponsors. Session one is from 9-11 a.m. while session two is from 1-3 p.m. This is open to anyone living in Allendale, Barnwell and Bamberg counties.

Music & Arts Festival

The Blackville Music & Arts Festival will be May 19-20 in downtown Blackville. Live performances include the Terence Young Experiment and Big Mike of Making the Band 4.

Allendale Fish Fry

The Allendale County Democratic Party will host its Annual COOTER-FEST Kick-Off Fish Fry on Thursday, May 4 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Allendale Community Center {downtown Flat Street, Allendale}. Cost is $10 donation.

Hilda Fish Fry

Hilda Southern Methodist Church will host a fish fry fundraiser on May 6 from 4-6 p.m.

Tickets are available for $8 and will include: fried fish, grits with stewed tomatoes, cole slaw, and hush puppies. Tea or water will be available for dine-in only.

All donations will benefit the building fund.

Car Wash & Doughnuts

Allen Street Church of God (1017 Allen St., Barnwell) will hold a car wash and Krispy Kreme doughnuts fundraiser on Saturday, May 6 beginning at 9 a.m. in the Advanced Auto parking lot on Dunbarton Blvd. Doughnuts are $8/box. Proceeds support the youth attending state youth convention.

Church Plant Sale

Holy Apostles Church is having their annual plant and bake sale on Saturday, May 6 from 8 a.m. to noon.

FFA Plant Sale

The FFA students at the Barnwell County Career Center are selling plants they grew. Though some of the flowering plants are still slightly behind, they have beautiful vegetable and herb plants ready to sell along with some flowering items. Official kickoff is April 25 at 9 a.m. They will be open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Proceeds will be used by students to attend upcoming activities such as Summer Camp, State FFA Convention, and National FFA Convention.

Dean Scarbeary Golf Tournament

Swiss Krono will sponsor its annual Dean Scarbeary Memorial Golf Tournament on Saturday, May 27 at 10 a.m. at Sweetwater Country Club to raise money for the Animal Advocates in Barnwell. The tournament is named in memory of Dean Scarbeary, a Swiss Krono employee who was the driving force of the company’s annual golf outing but died in a house fire in 2014.

Golfers may sign up individually or as a team. Sign in will be at 9 a.m. and shotgun start at 10 a.m. Green fees, carts, snacks, beverages, one raffle ticket, three mulligans, and lunch will be included in the fee - $75 for individuals or $300 for a team. Deadline to sign up is May 21.

Bargain Sale

Coming May 4, 5 and 6 is the First Baptist “Bargain Sale” to benefit “The Elevator Fund” at 21 Allen Street in Barnwell. There will be furniture, household items, books, toys, clothes for the entire family, outdoor items, antiques, collectibles and much more. The VIP Sale will be Thursday, May 4 from 5-8 p.m. with a $10 donation at the door, with lots of door prizes and your chance for first pick. They will be open Friday from 8 until 5 and Saturday from 9 until 4 with no donation required.

Come HUNGRY to the bargain sale! At the VIP Sale on May 4, Johnny Gray’s famous pulled pork sandwiches will be on sale with cole slaw, chips and a drink for $7. He’ll also be there on Friday and Saturday with burgers, hotdogs and other surprises.


Arts Council Scholarship

The Barnwell County Arts Council is currently accepting applications for the Jean Orr Belcher Scholarship. This one-time $500 scholarship will be awarded to a Barnwell County student who plans to pursue a career in the Arts.

Barnwell Library

•Teen Anime & Manga Club (New Event): Thursday, May 18 at 7 p.m. Share in the love of Japanese comics and animation. All teens in grades 7-12 are welcome. Snacks provided.

•Friday Family Movies: Every other week we will be showing a family movie on Friday afternoons at 3:30 p.m. with free popcorn and drink. All ages are welcomed; children under 11 must be accompanied by an adult. Movies are as follows: “Trolls” on May 5 and “Sing” on May 19.

•LEGO Club: Every third Wednesday (May 17) of the month at 3 p.m. Join us for LEGO fun…bring your imagination we will provide the rest. For grades K-5th only.

•Homeschool LEGO Club: Wednesday, May 17 at 1 p.m. Open to all homeschool families. Bring your lunch and build with our LEGOs. They’ll also have other STEM activities to try out.

•Preschool Story Time: Thursdays May 4 and 11 at 11 a.m. Stories, songs and more for ages 3-5.

•Potluck Book Club: Monday, May 22 at 3 p.m. Come and discuss what you are currently reading or one of your favorite books. Snacks provided.

•Lunch & a Movie: “La La Land” on Tuesday, May 23 at 1 p.m. Rated PG-13. Bring your lunch. Coffee and dessert provided

•Tech Help Tuesdays: Every Tuesday morning from 10 a.m. to noon come by the library with your personal devices (laptop, tablet, kindle, phone, etc.) and learn about the digital services the library has to offer and more.


Chavis-New Family

The Chavis-New Family Reunion will be held May 6 at the Barnwell State Park Communtiy Building, 223 State Park Rd., Blackville. Dinner will be served at 1 p.m. Everyone is asked to bring a covered dish and a drink. Plates, cups, napkins, spoons, forks and ice will be provided. Donations will be taken up to help cover the cost of the building rental. Bring old family photos to display.

Guinyard/Barnwell High Reunion

A reunion for members of the Guinyard-Butler High Classes of 1967-1970 and Barnwell High Classes 1971-1974 will be held Friday, August 4 to Sunday, August 6 at the Columbia Marriott (1200 Hampton Street, Columbia). The cost is $81/person. Attire is formal/semi-formal.

Blackville School Board

Barnwell District 19 School Board will have a special meeting on Thursday, May 4 at 10 a.m. at the district office.

Retired Educators

Barnwell County Retired Educator Meeting Monday, May 15 at 2 p.m. at the Barnwell County Library (40 Burr St., Barnwell). All retired teachers and staff from Barnwell, Blackville and Williston schools are invited to attend.

Allendale County Council

Allendale County Council’s regular meeting will be Thursday, May 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the J.W. Wall Jr.’s Council Chambers at the Allendale County Courthouse.

First Steps Board

The Barnwell County First Steps Partnership Board encourages the public to submit nominations to the Barnwell County First Steps Board of Trustees. Nominees should reside or be employed in Barnwell County. They need people from the business and faith communities.

Nominees should be individuals with resources, skills, knowledge, and interest in improving the readiness of young children for school. Nominations should be submitted to Barnwell County First Steps Office, 5961 Lartigue Street, Blackville, SC, 29817. BBSA Signups

BBSA will hold signups for 13-15-year-old boys (Dixie Boys) and girls (Dixie Belles) at Lemon Park from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on May 4. Cost is $75 per child. A representative will be stationed at the park close to the tower for more information.
