Barnwell Farmers Market
The Fuller Park Farmers Market will open for the season on Thursday, May 18. It will be open Tuesdays and Thursdays through August from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fuller Park (9987 Dunbarton Boulevard, Barnwell). There will be fruits, vegetables, baked goods, eggs, artisans and crafters.

Agatha Christie Play
An encore presentation of Agatha Christie’s murder mystery play “The Unexpected Guest” will be performed on Sunday, May 21 at 3 p.m. The audience is invited to play along and try to figure out who is the murderer. A vote will be taken at intermission.
Tickets are $12 in advance and can be purchased at Evelyn’s in Barnwell. Tickets at the door are $15.
Free Spay/Neuter Service
Fido Fixers, a mobile spay/neuter clinic, will be in Williston on May 17 offering free spay/neuter services to the first 10 pets to be signed up. Additional services, such as rabies vaccine, microchip and heartworm test, will be available for a fee.

Superintendent Meet & Greet
The Allendale County Schools Board of Trustees invites the public to a “Meet and Greet” for Interim Superintendent Dr. Secaida D. Howell on Wednesday, May 17 from 5-7 p.m. at Allendale-Fairfax High School.
Music & Arts Festival
The Blackville Music & Arts Festival will be May 19-20 in downtown Blackville. Live performances include the Terence Young Experiment and Big Mike of Making the Band 4.
Savannah River Classic
The Savannah River Classic Fishing Tournament will be May 20 on the Savannah River in Georgia and South Carolina. Categories are Bass, Catfish, Panfish (Redbreast, Crappie, Bream, Shellcracker) and Aggregate for Cash Prizes. Men’s, Ladies, Youth, and Bank Fishing divisions available.

Cost is: $25 for Adult Angler (boat), $10 for Youth Angler (15 & Under), and $10 for Bank Angler.
The Captain’s Fish Dinner is Friday, May 19 at 6:30 p.m. for anglers and sponsors. Come early to register, or to sign waiver forms if you registered online. Fish fry tickets available to the general public for $8.
Tournament starts May 20 at sunrise. Weigh-in begins at 3 p.m., ending at 5 p.m. with the award ceremony. Family activities are available to the public from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday at the Lower Savannah River Alliance Education Center (12049 Burton’s Ferry Hwy., Allendale).
Edisto River Tour
The Bamberg County Chamber of Commerce’s next South Fork of the Edisto River Canoe/Kayak River Trip is Saturday, May 20. They will be launching at 10 a.m. This trip is about three miles and will start at Claudes Landing, which is on Claudes Landing Rd. off of Charleston Augusta Hwy. between Sweden on U.S. Hwy. 321 & Finland on Country Club Rd. (State Hwy. 70). Take-out Ness Bridge Landing - Binnicker Bridge Rd. (State Hwy. 70)
Bring your own boat and gear. A life jacket & whistle are required by law. Free shuttle service provided.

Slithery Snakes Program
A “Slithery Snakes” program will be held May 27-28 from 1 to 2 p.m. each day at Shelter 4 at the Barnwell State Park in Blackville. This is a free event to educate about the common native venomous and non-venomous snakes in South Carolina. There will be snakes to hold or touch.
Blackville Public Safety Outreach
The Town of Blackville will conduct a Public Safety Outreach meeting on Tuesday, May 30 at 4 p.m. at the Blackville Community Center (19464 Solomon Blatt Avenue). It is specifically geared toward residents of the South Boundary neighborhood.
The Blackville Police Department, town leadership and members of the recently formed Blackville Neighborhood Watch will be present. Topics include: getting involved with the Neighborhood Watch program, building relationships with law enforcement and general crime prevention techniques that can be implemented.
Older Americans Month Cookout
A celebration for Older Americans Month will be held on Wednesday, May 31 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Gail Reyes Senior Center in Barnwell. There will be a cookout, outdoor games, music and fun.
Hike with a Ranger
Experience the natural beauty of the hiking trails at Rivers Bridge State Historic Site (325 State Park Road, Ehrhardt) and learn about the trials of a Civil War soldier and how the landscape impacted the defense of the Salkehatchie River during February 1865 while you Hike with a Ranger on June 3 at 9 a.m. Meet at the community building. Bring water, insect repellant and comfortable clothes.
Free Swim Program
The Barnwell Rotary Club is sponsoring the FINS Swimming Program to ensure B.B. Baxley’s dream continues. Youth in Barnwell County are being offered free swimming lessons June 5-8 and June 12-15 in Barnwell and June 12-15 in Blackville. During these one-week sessions, youth will learn water safety knowledge.
Parents with children ages 4-16 are encouraged to complete an application for their children. Each child may register for only one session. This program has had great success and we are very excited to continue this program this year. It is extremely important to everyone involved in this project that the youth in Barnwell County know how to swim, and even more importantly they know how to swim safely.

Rib & Chicken Dinners
Springfield Missionary Baptist Church in Barnwell will be selling dinners on Saturday, May 20 at 148 Ashley Lane (off Highway 300) in Barnwell from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Meats will be ribs, chicken and chopped BBQ. Each plate has a choice of two sides: mac and cheese, green beans, dirty rice and corn on the cob. Dessert will also be available for $1/slice. Hotdogs will also be sold.
Jailbreak 5K Run/Walk
The Lexington County Sheriff’s Foundation invites you to the 11th Annual “Jailbreak 5K Run & Walk” on Saturday, May 27 at the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department (521 Gibson Rd., Lexington). Race starts at 8 a.m. with packet pick up and late registration beginning at 6:15 a.m.
Entry fee is $25 prior to race day or $30 on May 27.

FFA Plant Sale
The FFA students at the Barnwell County Career Center are selling plants they grew. They have vegetable and herb to sell along with flowering items. They will be open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Proceeds will be used by students to attend upcoming activities.

Dean Scarbeary Golf Tournament
Swiss Krono will sponsor its annual Dean Scarbeary Memorial Golf Tournament on Saturday, May 27 at 10 a.m. at Sweetwater Country Club to raise money for the Animal Advocates in Barnwell. The tournament is named in memory of Dean Scarbeary, a Swiss Krono employee who was the driving force of the company’s annual golf outing but died in a house fire in 2014.
Golfers may sign up individually or as a team. Sign in will be at 9 a.m. and shotgun start at 10 a.m. Green fees, carts, snacks, beverages, one raffle ticket, three mulligans, and lunch will be included in the fee - $75 for individuals or $300 for a team. Deadline to sign up is May 21.

The First Baptist “Bargain Sale” to benefit “The Elevator Fund” has been extended one more weekend at 21 Allen Street in Barnwell. Prices will be discounted on Friday, May 19 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, May 20 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be furniture, household items, books, toys, clothes for the entire family, outdoor items, antiques, collectibles and much more.
STEM Summer Enrichment
Dreams, Imagination & Gift Development Program will hold a summer enrichment program Monday through Friday between June 5-30 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Students in grades first through eighth will gain math, science and literature enrichment, interactive learning, engineering principles and recreation. Camp will be held at Winfield Heights Baptist Church in Williston.
Cost is $35/child per week. Additional children are $25/week.

Blackville-Hilda High School’s seniors will present The Living Literature Museum on May 17 from 9 to 11 a.m. and noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Blackville Community Center.
D19 Teacher of Year Gala
The Blackville-Hilda Public Schools’ Teacher of the Year Gala will be May 18 at 6 p.m. at the Blackville Community Center. Cost is a $20 donation.
Arts Council Scholarship
The Barnwell County Arts Council is currently accepting applications for the Jean Orr Belcher Scholarship. This one-time $500 scholarship will be awarded to a Barnwell County student who plans to pursue a career in the Arts.

Summer Reading Program
Summer Reading registration begins May 22 at the Barnwell County Public Library, Blackville Branch Library and Williston Branch Library. The Summer Reading Program is a fun and free way to encourage students to read during the summer months. Students that choose not to read this summer could lose up to three months of reading skills! Let your local library help with incentives and events for students of all ages!
•Teen Anime & Manga Club: Thursday, May 18 at 7 p.m. Share in the love of Japanese comics and animation. All teens in grades 7-12 are welcome. Snacks provided.
•Friday Family Movies: Every other week we will be showing a family movie on Friday afternoons at 3:30 p.m. with free popcorn and drink. Children under 11 must be accompanied by an adult. Movies are: “Sing” on May 19.
•LEGO Club: Every third Wednesday (May 17) of the month at 3 p.m. Join us for LEGO fun…bring your imagination we will provide the rest. For grades K-5th only.
•Homeschool LEGO Club: Wednesday, May 17 at 1 p.m. Open to all homeschool families. Bring your lunch and build with our LEGOs. They’ll also have other STEM activities to try out.
•Potluck Book Club: Monday, May 22 at 3 p.m. Come and discuss what you are currently reading or one of your favorite books. Snacks provided.
•Lunch & a Movie: “La La Land” on Tuesday, May 23 at 1 p.m. Rated PG-13. Bring your lunch. Coffee and dessert provided.
•Tech Help Tuesdays: Every Tuesday morning from 10 a.m. to noon come by the library with your personal devices (laptop, tablet, kindle, phone, etc.) and learn about the digital services the library has to offer and more.
Generations Unlimited Board
The administrative board meeting for Generations Unlimited will be May 18 at 5:15 p.m. in the Richardson Building (10915 Ellenton Street, Barnwell).
Allendale County Council
Allendale County Council’s regular meeting will be Thursday, May 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the J.W. Wall Jr.’s Council Chambers at the Allendale County Courthouse.
First Steps Board
The Barnwell County First Steps Partnership Board encourages the public to submit nominations to the Barnwell County First Steps Board of Trustees. Nominees should reside or be employed in Barnwell County. They need people from the business and faith communities.
Nominees should be individuals with resources, skills, knowledge, and interest in improving the readiness of young children for school. Nominations should be submitted to Barnwell County First Steps Office, 5961 Lartigue Street, Blackville, SC, 29817. Nomination forms and additional information are available from Barnwell County First Steps Office, or by calling (803) 284-3160. Deadline for nominations is May 17.
Allendale County School Board
The Allendale County School Board meets Monday, May 22 at 6 p.m. Closed session will be held from 6-7 p.m. with the public portion to begin at 7 p.m. at the Allendale-Fairfax Middle/High School multi-purpose room.
Soccer Club Meeting
The Barnwell Soccer Club is hosting their annual Open Meeting on June 2 at 6 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Barnwell County Library on Burr Street. The meeting is open to the public.
