At its June 27 meeting, the Barnwell Lions Club presented D. Austin Shelley scholarships to three Barnwell area graduates.

These scholarships are in honor of Mr. Shelley who was one of the charter members of the Barnwell Lions Club. He was a graduate of Clemson University, a veteran of World War II, and a long-time county extension agent. He stressed the importance of academic scholarship and community service which are the fundamental criteria in which these three graduates have distinguished themselves.

This year’s recipients are Leslie Yearry, who will attend the University of South Carolina and intends to become a surgeon; Douglas Scruggs, who will attend Clemson University and will major in engineering; and Catherine Garvin, who will attend the University of South Carolina at Aiken and intends to become a physical therapist.

“We wish them well as they continue in their academic studies and service to their community,” according to a press release from the club.
