Farmers Markets
Barnwell: The Fuller Park Farmers Market is open to local artisans and crafters this year and we encourage those in the area to participate in the market. They are accepting vendor applications for the 2014 season. May- September market is on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Elko: The Elko Farmers' Market is seeking vendors for its 2014 season, including farmers and gardeners with cool weather crops, early spring produce like salad greens, broccoli, cabbage, beets, garden peas, spinach and other greens. Berries and bedding plants are also good sellers in the spring and early summer. Crafters and bakers are also welcome.

It's every Saturday until mid-fall, at the corner of Hwy. 78 in Elko. WIC vouchers and senior checks are also accepted.

"Slippry Snake" Presentation: A snake show will be held at the Barnwell State Park on August 30th & 31st at 4PM. The presentation will be held at Shelter #4. For more information, contact Derral at (803) 516-1995.

River Trips
The Bamberg County Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring South Fork River Trips the third Saturday during the months of June through September - currently September 20. Meet at Bobcat Landing (on U.S. 301) north of Bamberg by 9 a.m.
Free shuttle service is provided, but donations are accepted.

‘No Boys Allowed' Luncheon
The Barnwell County Arts Council and the Barnwell County Museum will host a "No Boys Allowed" luncheon on Saturday, September 20 at 11:30 a.m. at the Effie Mae Fuller Center.
Tickets are $20 for adults and $7 for anyone under the age of 18. Anyone purchasing a $20 luncheon will receive one free opportunity to win an original, custom made dollhouse. All proceeds from the dollhouse fundraiser will benefit the Jean Orr Belcher Scholarship Fund. The dollhouse drawing will be held on December 4 at the Tree Lighting Ceremony on the Circle in Barnwell.

AARP Driver Safety
AARP Driver Safety will be holding their next class on Thursday, October 23, at Generations Unlimited, located at 11403 Ellenton St., Barnwell. Class will begin at 9 a.m. and run until 3:30 p.m. You may bring lunch or purchase for a nominal fee from Generations Unlimited.
The cost for class materials is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members, cash or check (payable to AARP). Completion of this class may result in a discount on the participant's automobile insurance.

Gail Reyes Senior Center (on U.S. 278 near Barnwell airport) has events each day:

Better Choices, Better Health Classes
Better Choices, Better Health classes will be available in Williston soon.
Better Choices, Better Health is a free six-week curriculum consisting of 2.5 hour courses on living with or caretaker of someone with chronic illness.
The planned begin date for these classes are September 30, 2014 with the classes being held from 10-12:30 p.m. There are at least 10-15 participants required for this class to be held.

Make it and Take it Art Classes
The Barnwell County Museum and Effie Mae Fuller Community Center will have free Make It and Take It art classes with Glenda Buchanan.
The classes start on September 8 and run through October 13 from 6-7 p.m. every Monday.
This is for ages 9 to 12. Children must have own transportaiton for drop off and pickup and must be signed up with the Barnwell Recreation Department.
Art on the Half Shell: Oyster Roast
The Bamberg County Chamber of Commerce is hosting an oyster roast and membership drive on October 4 at the Hooten-Black House in Bamberg.
The event goes from 2-4:30 p.m.
Fall Festival Vendor Registration
The deadline for vendor registration for the Fall Festival and Craft Fair at the Barnwell County Museum is October 30.

‘God of Carnage'
Circle Theatre's opening production for the 2014-2015 season "God of Carnage" performances are October 3,4,10 and 11 with matinees on October 5 and 12.
Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for seniors and students.
Season tickets are also available to include admission to the season's three shows. Call 259-7046 to make a reservation.
"Sound of Music" Auditions
Auditions for Circle Theatre's production of "Sound of Music" will be September 9,11,15 and 16 at 7 p.m. each night at Barnwell First Baptist Church. Come prepared to sing a song of your choosing, with or without music, as well as reading lines for various roles.
Children and teenagers will be needed as well as all singing roles. The preferred age range is 8-18.
The theatre will need three males and five females for the Von Trapp children and Rolph.
Many adults will be needed to fill the various roles including the leading roles of Maria and Captain Von Trapp.

Barnwell Academy Registration
Barnwell Academy is now accepting applications for the 2014-2015 school year for Preschool-6th grade. Barnwell Academy is a faith-based, SCISA accredited Christian school now located on Ellenton Street.

Jefferson Davis Academy
Jefferson Davis Academy is now accepting applications for 2014-145 school year. Grade levels for enrollment are 3K - 12th grades. They also offer an afterschool care program from 2 to 4 p.m. for a very nominal fee.

Winfield Heights Kindergarten
Winfield Heights Christian Kindergarten is enrolling for the 2014-15 school year for grades K3, K4 and K5.

Stay and Play Child Care Center
Bedford's Stay and Play Child Care Center is currently accepting applications for the four-year-old Kindergarten. This is a free program.
To qualify your child must: be 4 years of age on or before September 1, 2014. Be eligible for free or reduced-price lunch or Medicaid. Live in Barnwell County School District. To enroll please bring a copy of your child's birth certificate, two proofs of residency, a copy of your child's immunizations, proof of family income, copy of Medicaid (if you receive Medicaid), and a completed applications (applications are available at the center).

Zumba Classes
Zumba classes are held on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10 to 11 a.m. $5 per class. Classes are held at the Effie Mae Community Center at the corner of Hagood and Marlboro, Barnwell.
Barnwell Recreational After School Walk
The Barnwell Recreational Department will have adult supervised after school walks from September 9 to October 14 from 2:30-4 p.m. This event is for children ages 6-8.

 

Blackville Planning Commission
The Blackville Planning Commission will meet Thursday, August 28 at 3:30 p.m. in the Blackville Town Hall Council Chambers.

Museum/Historical Board Workshop
The Barnwell County Museum & Historical Board is having a Workshop Retreat for board members and its regular monthly board meeting on Tuesday, September 2. The retreat and meeting will be held at board member Libby Still's home on Still Family Farm Road (off Highway 78 in Blackville). The retreat will begin at 1 p.m. and the board meeting will begin at 3:30 p.m.

W-E CommUNITY Coalition
The W-E CommUNITY Coalition will meet on Monday, September 8 at the Williston Town Hall beginning at 6 p.m. prior to the Town Council meeting at 7 p.m..
The Coalition currently has formed committees for its activities related to 1) Faith-based, 2) Civil Rights/Social Justice, 3) Community, Recreational and Social Enrichment, and 4) Marketing/Outreach. All Community members, elected officials, faith-based and community organization leaders are requested to attend.

 

Blackville High 60s Reunion
There will be a 60s Reunion for the classes of 1960 to 1970 from Blackville High School on Saturday, September 6 at the Blackville Community Center (old gym) at 5 p.m. Cost is $30 per person.
