‘Annie' Auditions
Circle Theatre is holding auditions for the spring production of "Annie" in two sessions.
Remaining children's (specifically Annie and orphans) auditions will be held at 6 p.m. Jan. 16 at Barnwell First Baptist Church. They need girls ages 6 - 12 who can sing, dance and act. All ethnicities are encouraged to attend. Please come prepared to sing (may bring own CD selection if desired). They will be doing cold readings from the script.
Auditions for all other roles will be held Jan. 20, 21 & 23 at 6:30 p.m. at Barnwell FBC. Specifically, they are looking for four men (ages 25 - 50), four women (18 - 50) and several other non-speaking roles for men and women (16-40). The primary characters will have either solo or duet singing roles with the rest of the cast singing ensemble.
Production dates are May 2, 3, 4, 9, 10 & 11, 2014. Rehearsals begin Feb. 3 and will be every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

Senior Driving Course
Refresh your driving skills with the AARP Smart Driver Course on Jan. 16 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Gail Reyes Senior Center on Ellenton Street in Barnwell.
You will learn defensive driving techniques, proven safety strategies, and new traffic laws and rules of the road. Plus, there are no tests to pass. Upon completion you could receive a multi-year discount on your car insurance.
It costs $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members. Lunch will be provided for a nominal fee.

Rapping for Life
Rapping for Life will be held Jan. 18 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Blackville Community Center. Motivational speakers will be present. This program is for ages 6 to 18. Anyone under age 5 should be accompanied by an adult.

MLK Walk
The Community Service Club in Williston is sponsoring its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Walk on Jan. 20. Walkers are asked to line up in front of the Williston District 29 office building at 9:30 a.m. The walk will begin at 10 a.m. and proceed to the clubhouse (146 Joseph St., Williston).

Mayors Dance
The town of Blackville will hold the First Annual Mayors Dance on Jan. 24 from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Blackville Community Center. There will be light refreshments.

Education Conference
Barnwell County First Steps will hold their annual Early Education Conference 2014, "Bridging, Understanding and Learning," on Saturday, Jan. 25 at Macedonia Elementary School (556 Jones Bridge Rd. Blackville) from 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.

Hotdog & Talk
The Hotdog & Talk youth organization presents part 2 of "Education Is Power" on Jan. 25 at 3 p.m. at the Barnwell library. Guest speaker LoAna Cooper will give information that will arm children with the right ammunition to prosper in a school environment and life.

‘Les Miserables' play at WEHS
Williston-Elko High School will present "Les Miserables School Edition" on Feb. 7 and 8 at 7 p.m. each night in the auditorium. It will be performed entirely by students.
The house will open at 6:30 p.m. Only limited seating may be available at the door. No seat reservations will be made so ticket holders should plan on arriving early. Any seats left open by curtain time will be sold to waiting customers.
The musical, written by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg, is based on Victor Hugo's novel. It is performed with permission and materials provided by Music Theatre International.
Tickets are $6 per seat and can be purchased from cast members or by calling Linda Alsept at WEHS at (803) 266-3110.

 

Pretty in Pink Pageant
The Pretty in Pink Relay for Life Pageant will be held Saturday, Jan. 18, at 11 a.m. at the Hilda Community Center (145 Church St., Hilda). The deadline to enter has passed.

Wonderland Circus
The Wonderland Circus is making two stops in Barnwell County this month.
Macedonia Elementary: The circus will be at Macedonia Elementary School in Blackville Thursday, Jan. 16, at 6:30 p.m. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
Advanced tickets are $4 for students and $5 for adults, and can be purchased at the school office. Tickets at the door cost $5 for students and $6 for adults.
Barnwell Primary: The Barnwell Primary School PTO is sponsoring the circus Friday, Jan. 24, at 6:30 p.m. in the Guinyard-Butler Middle School gym. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
Advanced tickets are $4 for students and $5 for adults, and can be purchased at the BPS office #2. Tickets at the door cost $5 for students and $6 for adults.

Relay for Life Pageant
The 1st Annual Miss Barnwell County Relay for Life Semi-Glitz Pageant will be held Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014, at 11 a.m. in the Guinyard-Butler Middle School gymnasium. Application deadline is Feb. 7.
Winners will be recognized at the 2014 Barnwell County Relay for Life on April 25 at Veteran's Park.

Arts Council Membership Drive
The Barnwell County Arts Council is proud to present its annual membership event entitled, California Dreaming, on Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. at the Barnwell Primary School auditorium.
California Dreaming is a sun-kissed song and dance tribute to the pop music of a new generation. Songs like "Wouldn't It Be Nice," "Turn,Turn,Turn," "Teach Your Children Well," "Surfin' U.S.A.," and "California Dreamin'" make this the sunniest, most nostalgic stage show in America!

BPS Montessori Interest Meetings
Attention parents of children 3 years old by Sept. 1, 2014: There is one remaining Montessori Interest meeting for the 2014-2015 school year on Tuesday, Jan. 21, at 6:30 p.m. in the Barnwell Primary auditorium. Parents must attend one meeting to receive an application.
Meetings will explain Montessori education and the application process. Montessori includes Individualized Instruction, Hands-on Learning, Multi-age Classes, and Emphasis on discovery learning and independence.
Parent must provide application with Certified Birth Certificate, S.C. Shot Record, Child's Social Security Card, and two Current Dated Proofs of Residence by March 14, 2014, to be eligible for lottery drawing.

Financial Aid Workshop
Barnwell High School Guidance Office is offering a free Financial-Aid Workshop to seniors and their parents on Thursday, Jan. 23, at 6:30 p.m. in the school's media center.
Julie Hadwin, Financial-Aid Director at USC Salk, will conduct the workshop. Joey Hughes, admissions counselor, will also be available. Many questions will be addressed concerning every possible aid available to finance further education as well as information concerning the U.S. Government Financial-Aid Forms.

SRR Internships
Applications for Savannah River Remediation's 2014 Summer Student Internship Program are being accepted until Jan. 31.
Each year, SRR selects students through an application process to participate in a three-month long internship program with the SRS liquid waste contractor. Students apply from colleges and universities in South Carolina, Georgia and various other colleges and universities across the nation to test their classroom knowledge next to some of the country's best workers, and to learn what real-world experience means.
Past interns range in age from 19-38, and have pursued degrees in various fields including Engineering, Business and Communication, etc.
The internships will begin mid-May and are expected to conclude in early August. To qualify for an SRR Internship, you must be a U.S. citizen, be enrolled as a full-time student at an accredited four-year university, and currently have a GPA of 2.5 or higher.

Barnwell Museum Art Contest
The Barnwell County Museum is having an art contest for Barnwell County artists ages 16 and up.
The sketch must: Contain an historical event, person, place, object (or combination thereof) that is of significance to Barnwell County; Have an animal in the painting in recognition of the Animal Advocates; Be approximately one foot by one foot on poster board (does not need to be in oil or acrylic but does need to be in color); Be submitted to the museum, P.O. Box 422, Barnwell, S.C. 29812 by Saturday Feb.15, 2014; Be completed and submitted to the museum by April 17; Contain the artist's name, address, phone number and age.
The final painting must be in acrylic or oil on a four foot by four foot stretch canvas which will be provided by the museum.
The winner will be selected by an unbiased board of Barnwell County citizens on or before Feb. 28. There will be an unveiling and a reception for the winner along with prize presented on May 3.

 

Retired Educators
Barnwell County Retired Educator Meeting will be Wednesday, Jan. 15, at 10 a.m. at the Barnwell County Library (40 Burr St., Barnwell). All retired teachers and staff from Barnwell, Blackville and Williston schools are invited to attend.

Cancer Support
The Barnwell County Cancer Support Group meets monthly on the third Thursday, unless there is a conflict with church calendar, at Elko Baptist Church.

Real Talk of AA
The Real Talk Group of Alcoholics Anonymous now meets at Gateway Church (8678 Marlboro Ave., Barnwell) every Monday and Friday at 7 p.m.

Lions Club
Come join the Lions Club, the largest service organization in the world. The Lions' mission is to assist needy citizens in their efforts to obtain proper vision care. Barnwell County Lions Club meets the 2nd and 4th Tuesday evening in the Fellowship Hall of the Barnwell Presbyterian Church. Dinner begins at 7 p.m. with a community related program beginning around 7:30.

Animal Advocates
The Pick of the Litter Shoppe is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Donations are now accepted Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Heavier donations such as furniture should be taken to POTL on Wednesdays and Saturdays when men are working.
The Animal Advocates' Friends for Life Center is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and by appointment by calling (803) 259-(LIVE) 5483. They are closed to the public on Sunday and Monday.

 

Baseball/Softball Registration
The Barnwell Baseball Association will hold registration for baseball and softball for boys and girls ages 4 to 15 at the following locations: Jan. 18 at the Barnwell County Library from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.; Jan. 21 at Guinyard-Butler Middle School from 9 a.m. to noon; Jan. 23 at the Barnwell library from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.; Jan. 25 at the Barnwell library from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.; Jan. 28 at the Barnwell library from 9 a.m. to noon; Jan. 30 at the Barnwell library from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.; and Feb. 1 at the Barnwell library from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Registration fees: tee ball (5 and 6 year old boys and girls) is $45, boys baseball (ages 7-12) is $55, girls softball (ages 7-12) is $55, bells softball (ages 13-15) is $75, and Dixie boys baseball (ages 13-15) is $75.
