Relay for Life
Kick-off
The 2014 Barnwell County Relay for Life Kick-Off will be Jan. 9, 2014, at 5:45 p.m. at the Southern Carolina Alliance Building Edisto Room. Anyone interested in having a team for the 2014 Relay is encouraged to come. The speaker for the evening is Ron Still. They will also reveal their theme for the 2014 Relay.

Recreation Meeting
A public input meeting concerning the development of a YMCA will be held on Jan. 9 at 6 p.m. at the Gail Reyes Center (11403 Ellenton St., Barnwell).

‘Annie' Auditions
Circle Theatre will be holding auditions for the spring production of "Annie" in two sessions.
Children's (specifically Annie and orphans) auditions will be held at 6 p.m. Jan. 13, 14 & 16 at Barnwell First Baptist Church. They need girls ages 6 - 12 who can sing, dance and act. All ethnicities are encouraged to attend. Please come prepared to sing (may bring own CD selection if desired). They will be doing cold readings from the script.
Auditions for all other roles will be held Jan. 20, 21 & 23 at 6:30 p.m. at Barnwell FBC. Specifically, they are looking for four men (ages 25 - 50), four women (18 - 50) and several other non-speaking roles for men and women (16-40). The primary characters will have either solo or duet singing roles with the rest of the cast singing ensemble.
Production dates are May 2, 3, 4, 9, 10 & 11, 2014. Rehearsals begin Feb. 3 and will be every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

Senior Driving Course
Refresh your driving skills with the AARP Smart Driver Course on Jan. 16 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Gail Reyes Senior Center on Ellenton Street in Barnwell.
You will learn defensive driving techniques, proven safety strategies, and new traffic laws and rules of the road. Plus, there are no tests to pass. Upon completion you could receive a multi-year discount on your car insurance.
It costs $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members. Lunch will be provided for a nominal fee.

Education Conference
Barnwell County First Steps will hold their annual Early Education Conference 2014, "Bridging, Understanding and Learning," on Saturday, Jan. 25 at Macedonia Elementary School (556 Jones Bridge Rd. Blackville) from 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.

Spaghetti Supper
Boy Scout Troop 392 is holding a spaghetti supper fundraiser Saturday, Jan. 11, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Barnwell First Baptist Church activity center. It'll be eat in or take out for $6 a plate (spaghetti, salad, roll, tea and dessert). Proceeds will help send scouts to Philmont Scout Ranch, a hiking and backpacking adventure in New Mexico.

Pretty in Pink Pageant
The Pretty in Pink Relay for Life Pageant will be held Saturday, Jan. 18, at 11 a.m. at the Hilda Community Center (145 Church St., Hilda). Deadline to enter is Jan. 11.
Choose from natural or glitz. Supreme Package is $50 per pageant or do both for $80. Admission is $5 for everyone, though children under five are free.
Divisions (age as the day of the pageant): Boys: 0-2, 3-5, 6&up; and Girls: 0-11, 12-23, 2yr, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-15, 16-19, 20&up (single/married).

Relay for Life Pageant
The 1st Annual Miss Barnwell County Relay for Life Semi-Glitz Pageant will be held Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014, at 11 a.m. in the Guinyard-Butler Middle School gymnasium. Application deadline is Feb. 7.
Winners will be recognized at the 2014 Barnwell County Relay for Life on April 25 at Veteran's Park.

Montessori Interest Meetings
Attention parents of children 3 years old by Sept. 1, 2014: Montessori Interest Meetings for the 2014-2015 school year will be Tuesday, Jan. 14, at 7:30 a.m. and Tuesday, Jan. 21, at 6:30 p.m. in the Barnwell Primary auditorium. Parents must attend one meeting to receive an application.
Meetings will explain Montessori education and the application process. Montessori includes Individualized Instruction, Hands-on Learning, Multi-age Classes, and Emphasis on discovery learning and independence.
Parent must provide application with Certified Birth Certificate, S.C. Shot Record, Child's Social Security Card, and two Current Dated Proofs of Residence by March 14, 2014, to be eligible for lottery drawing.

Barnwell Museum Art Contest
The Barnwell County Museum is having an art contest for Barnwell County artists ages 16 and up.
The sketch must: Contain an historical event, person, place, object (or combination thereof) that is of significance to Barnwell County; Have an animal in the painting in recognition of the Animal Advocates; Be approximately one foot by one foot on poster board (does not need to be in oil or acrylic but does need to be in color); Be submitted to the museum, P.O. Box 422, Barnwell, S.C. 29812 by Saturday Feb.15, 2014; Be completed and submitted to the museum by April 17; Contain the artist's name, address, phone number and age.
The final painting must be in acrylic or oil on a four foot by four foot stretch canvas which will be provided by the museum.
The winner will be selected by an unbiased board of Barnwell County citizens on or before Feb. 28. There will be an unveiling and a reception for the winner along with prize presented on May 3.

 

DTC Alumnae Chapter
 Denmark Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will have its monthly meeting on Sunday, Jan. 12, at 3 p.m. at Voorhees College.

Retired Educators
Barnwell County Retired Educator Meeting will be Wednesday, Jan. 15, at 10 a.m. at the Barnwell County Library (40 Burr St., Barnwell). All retired teachers and staff from Barnwell, Blackville and Williston schools are invited to attend.

The Barnwell County Cancer Support Group meets monthly on the third Thursday, unless there is a conflict with church calendar, at Elko Baptist Church.

Real Talk of AA
The Real Talk Group of Alcoholics Anonymous now meets at Gateway Church (8678 Marlboro Ave., Barnwell) every Monday and Friday at 7 p.m.

 

Funding Available
Eat Smart Move More Barnwell County has received funding to partner with faith-based organizations in Barnwell County on implementing 100 percent tobacco-free policies for their facilities and grounds. The implementation of this tobacco-free policy will have a large impact and benefit the overall health of your congregation.
ESMMBC will provide information and education on the harms associated with tobacco use and secondhand smoke for your key leaders and congregation members. Each faith-based organization that adopts and implements a 100% Tobacco-free policy will receive a $500 stipend. ESMMBC will also provide information on the benefits of eating fresh fruits and vegetables and increasing physical activity.

Hospice Volunteers
United Hospice of Aiken
Are you going in the health field? Are you going into the social work field or are you just a caring person?
We are in need of volunteers in the Barnwell area to sit with our patients. You can read to them, play them music, play games or just be their friend. Some folks have no one to visit them. You could see them in their home or in the nursing facility. Come join our team. Training provided.

Have one extra hour a week? Love to bake, take care of pets or spend time talking with someone? Become a volunteer and make a difference in the life of hospice patient and family.

Regency Hospice
Regency Hospice is seeking volunteers and Spanish-speaking volunteers in Barnwell County.
Opportunities range from social contact for the patient and caregiver, providing spiritual support, running errands, assistance with house/yard maintenance to office assistance as requested. By visiting an assigned patient regularly, you give a much needed break to a caregiver, a gift of listening and compassion, and a gift of support and assistance.
Free training is available and no medical background is needed.
