Peanut Field Day
Clemson University will host a Peanut Field Day Sept. 5 at the Edisto Research and Education Center. The field day is free and open to the public and includes lunch. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. The field tour starts at 9:30 a.m. and will make four stops.
There also will be a corn field tour and presentation from 1 to 2 p.m. that includes corn weed and insect management and a disease review.

United Way Campaign
The Barnwell County United Way will host a campaign kick-off drop-in on Sept. 5 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Barnwell County Library community room. Their goal is to raise $125,000 this year.
Animals from the Barnwell County Animal Shelter will be available for adoption at the Tractor Supply in Barnwell the morning of Sept. 14. There will also be a bake sale and collection of any nonperishable food items (canned food, boxed mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, etc.) to the list to be given to the Axis 1 Center in Barnwell for Allie Padgett, S.C. Community Queen and S.C. Teen Miss Heart of the USA.
Freedom Fund Dinner
The Barnwell-Blackville Branch NAACP will host its annual Freedom Fund Dinner on Saturday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m. at the Blackville Community Center (19464 Solomon Blatt Ave., Blackville). The speaker will be The Rev. Floyd Hughes, pastor of the Macedonia Baptist Church.

The American Cancer Society invites cancer patients in Barnwell, Bamberg, Allendale or Hampton counties to signup for the Look Good Fell Better session on Monday, Sept. 16. This free session will be held at the Barnwell City Hall at 6 p.m.
Cosmetology professionals will help patients with makeup application, tips for wig selection and wig care, dry skin, discolored nails, scarves, turbans and hats.

Third Thursday returns Sept. 19 from 5-7 p.m. in downtown Barnwell with entertainment by V&N Entertainment (Virginia Nettles and Neal Richardson).
Residents are encouraged to help "Stuff the Station" (old police station) with needed supplies for local teachers. Supplies can also be brought before Sept. 19 to city hall.
In partnership with the United Way, a health fair will be held. Several local medical groups will have health information and some will provide simple health checks, like blood pressure.
A Bike Rodeo will be held Saturday, Sept. 21, from 9 a.m. to noon at Snelling Park. All ages can bring their bikes. There will be bike safety and fit checks, bike safety presentation, bike obstacle course, and goodie bags.

The 2013 Hilda Gopher Festival will kick off Friday, Sept. 20, at 6:30 p.m. with a street dance and other entertainment at the Hilda Depot. It continues Saturday, Sept. 21, from 9 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. at the depot.
There will be a bake sale at 9 a.m., a "Decorate Your Trike, Bike, Wagon" contest to be judged at 10 a.m., parade at 11 a.m., and entertainment on the depot for all at 1 p.m. (including "Best Dressed Hat" contest, cake walk, local entertainment with dancing, singing, etc.). There will also be a jumping house with a slide and other children games for the children. Raffle tickets will be on sale for a seasonal wreath and a Clemson and Carolina yard sign.
Barnwell Academy will host a multi-family yard sale on Saturday, Sept. 7, from 6 a.m.-"until" in the parking lot of Mr. B's Restaurant in Barnwell. The yard sale proceeds will support student academic programs.
The Lexington County Sheriff's Foundation invites you for a morning of fun and competition at the "Jailbreak Escape Urban Challenge Run" on Saturday, Sept. 7 at the Lexington County Sheriff's Department (521 Gibson Rd., Lexington).
Packet pick-up and late registration begins at 6:15 a.m. with the race at 8 a.m.
Participants will race in two person teams. It costs $50 for a two-person team before Sept. 5 or $30 for one person. After Sept. 5 it costs $65 for a two-person team or $35 for single entry.

BES Family Night
Barnwell Elementary will hold their first Mi Rancho Family Night on Wednesday, Sept. 4, at Mi Rancho in Barnwell from 4 to 8 p.m. Students, parents and the community are encouraged to come out and eat with the principals and teachers. Future family nights will be held throughout the year.
BHS Open House
Barnwell High School's Open House will be held on Monday, Sept. 9. The same format will be utilized as last year in which a bell schedule will be followed. This allows parents the opportunity to move through their child's A and B days.
Parents may pick-up a copy of their child's schedule between 5:30 and 5:55. First period on "A" day will begin promptly at 6 p.m. Each of the eight classes (four "A" day and four "B" day classes) will meet for several minutes, allowing parents time to meet teachers as well as time to glimpse into the content of each course. Parents will be able to experience first-hand their child's daily routine.
JDA Senior Orientation
Jefferson Davis Academy will hold an orientation for seniors and their parents on Monday, Sept. 9, at 6:30 p.m. in the JDA cafeteria.
Senior year is always a stressful time for seniors as well as their parents. This workshop will cover concerns about the college application process, financial aid, scholarships, and career opportunities. Make plans to attend this one-hour orientation.
BCCC Open House
The Barnwell County Career Center will hold their open house Monday, Sept. 9, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
BPS Title 1
There will be a Title I Annual Meeting on Sept. 10 in the Barnwell Primary School auditorium at 5:30 p.m. Parents are encouraged to attend.
GBMS Open House
Guinyard-Butler Middle School will hold their open house Sept. 17 from 6 to 7 p.m. Parents will have the opportunity to join the PTO and School Improvement Council.
The Local Artist of the Month for September is The Art Studio's students. This art will be displayed all month with the Meet & Greet on Sunday, Sept. 22 from 3 to 5:30 p.m.
The Fuller House Focus Gallery's newest exhibit is the "Back to School" features artifacts from the early 1800s until the present day. This exhibit will be showing until November.
Friday, Oct. 18: The Barnwell County Arts Council will have Serving up Soup for the Arts at the Effie Mae Fuller Center from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. For more information, contact Dana Bell or the Arts Council.
The annual Collector's Day will be held at the Effie Mae Fuller Center in October. The date will be announced around the beginning of September.
They need three more artists for the last three months of this year for the local artist of the month program. If you know of an artist that would like to show their work, please contact the museum.
Tea Party Patriots
The Barnwell County Tea Party Patriots will meet Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. at the the Winton Inn (8273 Marlboro Ave., Barnwell). Come early to eat from 6 to 6:45 p.m.
Anthony Williams of Hotdog & Talk will be the guest speaker. He is currently holding get togethers at the Barnwell County Library to provide youth with wholesome moral solutions to the challenges that confront them today.
Also scheduled to speak is Nancy Mace who has announced she would challenge Sen. Lindsey Graham in next year's Republican Party primary in South Carolina.
Descendants of Perry and Sally Grubbs Still, Bunyan Still, Levy Still, Norman Still, Franklin Still, and Eloise Still Sanders are invited to a reunion Saturday, Sept. 7, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Reedy Branch Baptist Church's fellowship hall. Everyone is asked to bring a covered dish.
