Resolve to read God’s Word

First Byline:
Rev. Ashley Howell - Hilda Southern Methodist Church

As we finish up the first month of this new year of 2012, I can’t help but think of all of the New Year’s resolutions that were made only a few weeks ago. I decided to do a little research on these resolutions, and discovered that, according to the Opinion Corporation of Princeton, N.J., about 45 percent of Americans usually set New Year’s resolutions. Tragically, this same survey found out that only eight percent of Americans are always successful in achieving their resolutions.
This means that 92 percent of those who set resolutions fail to achieve everything that they want to! I certainly hope that we can do better than that in the goals that we set for ourselves as Christians!
One goal that I would encourage everyone to set for themselves is that of devoting yourself to the reading of God’s Word. Psalm 119:105 explains how important Scripture is to our Christian walk, by stating: “Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” If we want God to guide and direct us by the power of His Word, we then have a responsibility to study His Word! If we want to claim the promises that God makes to us in His Word, we should probably study His Word so that we know what those promises are!
If you haven’t already, let’s commit ourselves to studying the Word of God, starting today! There are a variety of study plans available online and in devotional reading, so you should have no problem finding one that meets your needs. Many people spend their lives waiting for a word from God, but at the same time they neglect the Word of God that is gathering dust on their bookshelf!
God is ready to speak to us. We need only to open the Holy Bible and listen.
