Seniors Zachary Hebbard and Shelby Peay have been named Commended Students in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program. Zachary and Shelby received this honor because they placed in the top five percent in the nation when they took the 2011 Preliminary SAT during their junior year.
Senior Raven Cooler has been named a semifinalist in the 2013 National Achievement Scholarship Program based on her score on the 2011 Preliminary SAT taken during her junior year. She is one of approximately 1600 Black American high school seniors that have been identified. These semifinalists are designated within geographic regions and represent the highest-scoring program entrants in the states that make up each region.
On Sept. 29, the BHS Debate Team competed at the University of South Carolina Novice Speech Tournament. They received the third place overall Sweepstakes Award. The Duo Interpretation Teams of Arlivia Cave, Ayana Gaines, Alexis Carrigg, Krista Spencer, Callie Wooldridge and Dalia Garcia swept first, second and third places in their category. Katelyn Ingram won an award in children's literature. Their next competition will be on Saturday, Oct. 27 at Stall High School in Charleston. The BHS Debate Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 10.
Congratulations to Art Teacher Mary Fleetwood for having received full funding for one of her Donor's Choose requests. Mrs. Fleetwood's request includes markers, drawing paper, graphite drawing pencils and colored pencils for her art classes. Donor's Choose is an online charity which allows school teachers to post classroom project requests on the www.donorschoose.org website. Then, the public can view all of the projects submitted and contribute any amount they choose in order to help fund any project they desire.
