STABLE TALK News from the campus of Barnwell High School

The Warhorse Café is open for business! Operated by Mrs. Ruxi Lemnaru's classes, with assistance from Mrs. Carol Free's Teacher Cadet class, this business provides the opportunity for students to practice school-to-work skills. Students are responsible for all of the day-to-day operations of a coffee shop such as the set-up and clean-up, customer relations, finances, inventory and advertising. The Warhorse Café is located in the lobby of the main entrance of the school and is open for business before school. Beverages currently available include coffee and hot chocolate, but plans are being made to offer other menu items after the winter break.
BHS students, faculty and staff have truly shown that this is the "season of giving." The JROTC department, in conjunction with the American Red Cross, coordinated a blood drive on Thursday, Nov. 29. Thirty-seven pints of blood were collected. Mrs. Denise Elkins of the Red Cross would like to thank everyone who made the effort to donate. During the school's annual Thanksgiving Food Drive, 1,050 canned and other non-perishable food items were collected and donated to Barnwell's Axis I Center. The students, faculty and staff also sponsored 15 children for the Rotary Club's Secret Santa project.
Eight BHS seniors have met the three criteria necessary for being named Palmetto Fellows: a class rank in the top six percent, a score of 1200 on the SAT or 27 on the ACT, and a cumulative GPA of at least 3.500 on the state's uniform grading scale. Congratulations to Walker Carroll, Raven Cooler, Zachary Hebbard, Shelby Peay, Corey Riley, Corey Smith, Anna Thomas and Brett Williams for achieving this distinction.
Sophomores Riley Ridgeway and Laura Burckhalter traveled to Saline, Mich., on Nov. 10 to compete in the Michigan State Baton Competition. Riley placed first in the two-baton routine, and Laura earned first place in the strut. Riley and Laura, along with Freshmen Hailey Williamson, Caroline Zissette and Ashley Boone, twirled for the pre-game entertainment at the Clemson-N.C. State football game on Saturday, Nov. 17.
