Board members honored for service

Two local school board members are among 33 percent of the state's 621 board members to have a decade or more of board service.
Williston District 29 Chairman Calvin Melton and Valenda Black, a Barnwell District 45 board member, were recognized by their boards during their January meetings for 10 years of service with a lapel pin and certificate from the S.C. School Boards Association (SCSBA).
According to a SCSBA press release, "Veteran school board members provide vision and valuable leadership for school districts."
District 29 Superintendent Dr. Tom Siler said Melton has put in a lot of hours over his years of service to the board, which "shows a commitment to the district's progress."
Likewise, District 45 Chairman Chad Perry said Black has played a "critical role" in bettering the district. "I don't think our kids could have a better advocate."
