Nix studies abroad in South Africa

Barnwell native Tony Nix is on a South African adventure of learning.
The Davidson College (near Charlotte, N.C.) student, who is majoring in anthropology, flew out Jan. 31 for three-and-a-half months of studying the (Zulu) language, political climate, and culture of South Africa.
"I'm really excited to be there and explore," said Nix of his first "extensive" trip outside of America.
While staying in cities such as Durban and Cape Town, Nix will live with local families and in hostels. "It forces you to be immersed in culture," said Nix, who returns to the states May 17.
He said the trip will give him valuable information as he pursues a job in non-profit arts administration after graduating from college in May 2014. In addition, he said the trip will probably give him a better appreciation of what he has as well.
Nix, who attended Barnwell High School his ninth and tenth grade years, is a graduate of the S.C. Governor's School of the Arts and Humanities. He enjoys singing and playing the trumpet.
Nix is the son of Angela Nix of Barnwell and has one sister, Alexis. He is the grandson of Juanita Williams and Peggy Nix.
