Ray wins first in state automotive contest

Barnwell County Career Center Automotive Technology student Christopher Ray won first place in Mobile Electronics at the SkillsUSA-SC student skills contest and advances to the national competition during the last week of June in Kansas City, Mo.
The contest was held in conjunction with other student skills events at the TD Convention Center in Greenville on April 12, 2013.
The students took written tests for technical knowledge and professional development. The technical test measures knowledge of electrical circuits and electronics as applied to vehicle accessory systems. For the hands-on portion, Ray was required to install a radio receiver in a vehicle dash, wire in an amplifier, vehicle door speakers and an auxiliary sub-woofer speaker set. He also had to demonstrate proper use of a digital multi-meter when troubleshooting electrical system faults.
Ray is a junior at Barnwell High School. This spring semester he has worked at The Shop (Mark Epperson, prop.) for his BCCC school-to-work co-operative education experience. He also qualified to compete in the Ford/AAA student skills competition at Charlotte Motor Speedway on May 4.
