Barnwell County jobless numbers level off

Some numbers held steady - some numbers caught people's attention when it comes to unemployment figures.

Allendale still tops the state's unemployment list, but Bamberg had the highest jump in March.

Barnwell County's unemployment rates stayed steady between February and March, holding at 17.2 percent, ranking Barnwell County eighth in the state for March.

However, the labor force numbers from March 2009 compared to March 2008 rose by 370 people in Barnwell County.

Sam McClary, a labor market analyst with the South Carolina Employment Security Commission said the labor force number includes employed and unemployed individuals.

He said this number rose due to new individuals entering the workforce, some by becoming old enough to work and some by other family members entering the workforce to support their families.

Allendale County at 22.3 perccent is still leading the state.

Bamberg County ranks sixth with 18 percent and tops the list for the highest jump in unemployment rates.

In February 2009 Bamberg County was at 16.8 percent while in March 2009 the county rose 1.2 percent, the highest in the state.

The report issued last week from the SCESC indicates South Carolina's jobless rate rose to 11.4 percent in March equaling the highest rate recorded since January 1983.
