Deadline nears for councils, mayor filing

The deadline to file for the Williston and Barnwell council elections is approaching.
This Friday, July 5, at noon is the closing date for residents to get their paper work to the county's Voter Registration and Election Office in Barnwell.
Three council seats are up for grabs in each town. The mayor's office in Williston is also on the ballot this year.
In Barnwell, districts 1, 3 and 5 will be on the ballot, and are currently held by J.T. Atkinson, Benjamin Duncan, and Robert Pattillo, respectively.
Barnwell's election will include redrawn district lines. Council voted last year to have the districts redrawn because of changes in population. Residents affected by the redrawn districts will be notified by mail.
As of early press time Monday, Duncan and Pattillo have filed, according to city clerk Kim Vargo.
Williston's council seats are all at-large. Mayor Pro Tem Wanda Matthews and councilmen Jerry Holmes and Jason Stapleton are up for re-election this year.
As of press time, Shawn Eric Moody has filed for council. Current councilman Jason Stapleton has filed for mayor, according to town clerk Angie Overton.
The filing fee to be a candidate is $25. The elections will be held Sept. 10.
