Relay for Life set for May 12
The American Cancer Society is looking to tackle cancer this Friday, May 12.
Relay for Life of Allendale and Barnwell Counties will take place that evening from 6 p.m. to midnight on the Allendale-Fairfax High School football field. Participants are encouraged to dress in their favorite team’s gear because the theme is “Teaming Up Against Cancer”.
“We encourage everyone from both counties to come join us,” said Tiffany Anselmo, community manager for the two counties.
While separate events have been held in Allendale and Barnwell in the past, the American Cancer Society merged the two events this year. Anselmo said the committee plans to rotate between the two counties, so next year’s event will be in Barnwell.
The event will kick off with a survivors’ lap where all cancer survivors are encouraged to participate.
Plenty of entertainment is scheduled, including singers and some group fitness class demonstrations from the Barnwell County Family YMCA, such as Zumba and line dancing.
Twenty-one teams are signed up to participate. Many of them will be selling food and other items during the event to raise money for cancer research and awareness. So far, $13,000 of the $50,000 goal has been raised, said Anselmo.
“It’s not too late to sign up,” said Anselmo of forming a team.
Later in the evening, the luminary service will be held where names of those who have been impacted by cancer, including those who lost their fight, will be read.
