Event aims to reconnect families, fathers on July 14

Father’s Day is over, but an upcoming event aims to reconnect families and fathers.

The S.C. Regional Housing Authority #3 and Beaufort Housing Authority are partnering to host a Belated Father’s Day Event on Friday, July 14 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Barnwell Elementary School (10524 Marlboro Ave., Barnwell). The theme is "Building Healthy Families”.

“The Department of Housing and Urban Development held its inaugural Father's Day event on June 18, 2011. Adapted from the NYCHA Fatherhood Initiative, the program was developed in response to the socioeconomic data indicating how children and youth are being negatively affected by father-absent homes. This event brought together federal agencies, local non-profits, national sports franchises and public housing authorities to create a day for fathers to bond with their children while learning about a range of available services,” according to a press release.

Why is there a focus on fatherhood in public housing?

“The majority of public housing households with children are headed by single women who earn less than $9,000 annually. While men are often present in and around public housing developments, most of the men are not formally on the lease and are often disconnected from formal programs that could lead to economic stability for themselves and their children,” stated the release.

S.C. Regional Housing Authority #3 has hosted an event six of the last seven years to assist in reconnecting families. The event is usually held in June, but was postponed this year.

“Hats off to all the agencies, faith-based organizations, law enforcement, lawyers, education departments, etc. for the many years you have partnered with us to help make this event a great success,” stated the release.

Any organization or agency wishing to partner with the housing authority and put up a booth should call (803) 259-4637.
