A Barnwell native is using her recent appearance on a television show to raise awareness about domestic violence.

Evelyn Frank, whose stage name is Evelyn LeTeshia, appeared in the Sept. 18 episode of the TV One true crime show “Fatal Attraction”. She played Sony Millbrook, a 28-year-old Memphis, Tenn. mother who was killed by her boyfriend, LaKeith Moody, in 2010.

“I absolutely love acting, so this role gave me the opportunity to continue to spread my wings in the acting world while simultaneously helping to shed light on a very real problem when it comes to domestic violence, with or without fatality,” said Frank, who filmed the episode May 22-25 in Knoxville, Tenn.

The episode hit close to home for Frank who grew up in South Carolina which has consistently ranked among the top 10 most deadly states in the nation for women at the hands of men, she said, citing an article published in The Post and Courier last year. The state was number one for four of those years, although South Carolina recently dropped to number five.

Though Frank used her acting skills to prepare for this role, she also has experienced emotional and/or physical abuse, both directly and indirectly, during her 29 years of life. She said she knows many others have been in similar situations, including men who are often silent “due to public opinion and gender bias.”

“Although it can be a difficult decision for men and women to leave a domestically violent environment, I would like them to know that it’s never too late to get out or to reach out for help,” she said.

She encourages anyone who needs help escaping a domestic violence situation to reach out to the National Domestic Violence Hotline to receive safety tips and planning from trained advocates. The 24/7 toll-free hotline can be reached at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or www.TheHotline.Org.

Frank also encourages people to follow their dreams regardless of self-doubt, tough circumstances, or what naysayers try to tell them.

“In my life where one door unexpectedly closed, many more have opened with others on the horizon. I truly believe that the positive energy one puts out always finds its way back,” she said. “Thoughts become words, and words become actions. Those components can be positive or negative and are very powerful! Use them carefully and wisely.”

Her experience working on “Fatal Attraction” put her one step closer to achieving her dream. She also made connections with fellow actors Jaime Dee, who played LaKeith Moody, and Von Jones, who portrayed the lead detective working the disappearance and murder of Millbrook.

Frank was recently cast as a lead in a television pilot that will be pitched to several well-known television networks in hopes of being picked up as a regularly broadcast series. “Due to privacy agreements, I cannot give any further details at this time, but we will be having our first table read and photo shoot at the beginning of October with filming to commence shortly after,” she said.

She also continues work on her upcoming studio album, “Heart Therapy”, as well as collaborations with other artists. Currently, her new single, ‘Boifriend,’ is available on iTunes, GooglePlay, Amazon, or directly from her website EvelynLeTeshia.wix.com/Music.

“I would like to thank my fans, family, friends, and hometown for their continued love and support. It sincerely is appreciated and does not go unnoticed,” said the 2006 graduate of Barnwell High School.
