School receives playground equipment

Playground equipment is under construction at Macedonia Elementary School in Blackville thanks to efforts by local organizations.

Bishop George Burckhalter said the Barnwell County Ministerial Association started the effort two years ago when then-MES principal Dr. Carolyn Anderson made known the need.

“The playground equipment that was there was awful,” said Burckhalter. “It was rusty and falling apart. It was dangerous.”

Since then the Ministerial Association has been raising money to purchase new equipment. Not only did they receive private donations but Axis 1 was able to obtain a grant and District 19 Superintendent Dr. Shawn Johnson obtained the rest of the funding.

The equipment has arrived and construction by Burckhalter and community members started Friday, Sept. 29.

“We have a slide, a merry-go-round, two swings, a climbing tower and a double climbing panel,” said Burckhalter.
