Sigma Gamma Rho holding breast cancer awareness event on Oct. 28
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated is committed to providing education on early detection as well as research for the prevention and cure of breast, prostate, ovarian, colon, and other types of cancers.
Internationally, the sorority highlights this project in a variety of ways in October as they honor a sorority sister and actress, the late Hattie McDaniel (best known for her role as Mammy in “Gone With The Wind”), who lost her battle with breast cancer. Sigma Gamma Rho recognizes Soror Hattie McDaniel by naming its national program in her honor.
The Eta Gamma Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho, serving Allendale, Bamberg and Barnwell counties, will sponsor its annual Breast Cancer Program, “The Pink RHOad”, on Saturday, October 28. It will be held at Massachusetts Hall on the campus of Voorhees College, Denmark, beginning at 12 p.m.
During the program, local cancer survivors will be recognized and share their stories. This year, University of South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame, Sheila Foster, will serve as the guest speaker and will also share her story and her sister’s story - her sister lost her battle with breast cancer.
In 1993, Foster was the first woman to be inducted into the University’s Sports Hall of Fame.
The public is invited to attend this program that will feature local survivors, a Breast Cancer Presentation, a Pink Ice Fashion Show and reception.
The Eta Gamma Sigma Chapter continues to solicit financial assistance from individuals, churches, businesses, and organizations that desire to be Pink Ribbon Sponsors ($50) or Pink Rose Sponsors ($25). All donations and contributions are tax-deductible and will be utilized to make this an elegant affair for all cancer survivors and guests. Sponsors’ names will be placed on the program. Sponsors are asked to send a representative to accept a token of appreciation.
Anyone interested in being a sponsor should return a check on or before October 15. If additional information is needed, please contact the chapter’s president, Dianna Davis-Bailey, at (803) 378-1380 or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
“Again, thank you for your continued support as we educate our community about cancer prevention and thank you for the love you express to this community and surrounding communities.”
