Hospital property up for auction
The former Southern Palmetto Hospital building and property is set to go on the auction block.
The sale will take place beginning at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 6 at the Barnwell County Courthouse.
According to a notice of sale published in this edition of The People-Sentinel, the property at 811 Reynolds Road includes 6.95 acres “with improvements” (buildings, etc.).
The sale is the result of an order “granted in the case of Franklin Synergy Bank vs. SC Healthcare Investments, LLC; RMC-Barnwell Healthcare, Inc.; Batson Associates, Inc.; and Mashburn Construction Company, Inc.”
The 53-bed former Barnwell County Hospital was purchased by S.C. Healthcare Investments, LLC from Barnwell County in June 2013. For decades the hospital struggled financially and county officials hoped at the time of the sale that its fortunes would change.
The name of the facility was changed to Southern Palmetto Hospital.
The hospital ran into financial trouble and closed unexpectedly in January 2016. As to why the hospital closed, a news release from the company at that time stated, “There has been a decline in hospital volumes over the past years to the point that maintaining a full service hospital for the current demand from acute and emergency patients is not sustainable. The hospital has been operating with losses from operations despite efforts to improve efficiency, collections and the facility. In (2015), the hospital lost $2.5 million from operations due to a low patient census and uncompensated care.”
When it closed the hospital employed 90 full-time and 28 part-time people. It also left Barnwell County residents and politicians scrambling for alternative healthcare options.
According to court documents, the bank filed for foreclosure in March 2017.
In addition to the property the notice states the sale includes “All of the borrower’s assets and personal property, including without limitation, all accounts, healthcare insurance receivables (however, this does not include Medicare payments or any other payment covered by the Federal Anti-Assignment Statute or similar State of South Carolina statutes of which Borrower shall continue to retain complete control until payments are made to Borrower), chattel paper, deposit accounts, documents, and proceeds of any of the foregoing, all whether presently existing or hereafter acquired or arising and wherever located but specifically being located at 811 Reynolds Road, Barnwell, South Carolina 29812 (collectively, “the Collateral”).”
