Williston bank raising money for breast cancer patients
First Citizens Bank of Williston is raising money to help those with breast cancer.
Pink boots are set up at each teller’s counter to collect monetary donations. All funds raised will go to SOS Lowcountry, an organization that seeks to enhance the quality of life for breast cancer patients in South Carolina.
“Our mission is to honor the spirit of Suzy McGrane by raising money and resources to assist and support breast cancer patients from diagnosis to remission,” according to the organization’s website.
McGrane was a photographer who was diagnosed in her early twenties with breast cancer. While battling cancer in Arizona near her family, her friends from South Carolina gathered in Columbia to find a way to help with the financial expenses related to her treatment. The friends put together a wine tasting event called Save Our Suzy (SOS). She successfully battled the cancer, but it returned in 2004 and claimed her life within a year. However, her memory lives on with the organization, which now stands for Share Our Suzy.
First Citizens employee Demaris Johnson picked SOS Lowcountry because “they helped me when I had breast cancer five years ago. Also, all the money they collect goes straight to women in the lowcountry that have breast cancer,” she said, adding how everyone at SOS are volunteers and takes no money for themselves.
