Smokers urged to go ‘Cold Turkey’, sign pledge
Every year, on the third Thursday of November, smokers across the nation take part in the American Cancer Society Great American Smokeout event.
Residents are asked to encourage someone they know to use the date to make a plan to quit, or plan in advance and then quit smoking that day. According to the ACS, by quitting – even for 1 day – smokers will be taking an important step toward a healthier life and reducing their cancer risk.
The Axis I Center of Barnwell will be hosting its 2nd annual “Quit Cold Turkey” campaign on November 16.
During the Quit Cold Turkey Campaign, Barnwell residents will sign pledge cards to either continue being tobacco free or set a date to Quit Cold Turkey.
“Keep your portion of the pledge card to remind you of your pledge, and send the other portion back to the Axis I Center of Barnwell to have your name entered into a drawing for a free turkey (just in time for Thanksgiving),” said Pam Rush of Axis 1. “The drawing will take place on November 16 so please send in pledge cards before this date.”
Pledge cards may be found at The People-Sentinel, Axis I Center of Barnwell, Shumperts Market in Williston and at local churches.
Last year over 20 turkeys were given out through the campaign, as well as 15 turkey sub coupons from Subway of Barnwell and Williston, said Rush.
“The Axis I Center of Barnwell would like to thank our partners for their donations in this campaign: Wal-Mart, IGA, Bi-Lo, Long Branch Deli, Schumpert’s Market, Subway of Barnwell, and Subway of Williston. Without the donations and support from these local partners the Quit Cold Turkey Campaign for The Great American Smokeout would not be the success that it has become,” said Rush.
