AmeriCorps team replaces fishing pier
Barnwell State Park has a new fishing pier thanks to the efforts of the AmeriCorps team.
The team of 10 young people, who are from all over the country, are volunteering across Barnwell County through Dec. 15. On Dec. 5 and 6 they replaced the old fishing pier, which was aged and weathered.
“It’s been a long-time need for the park,” said park manager Eddie Richburg. “It’s solid now and ready to be fished on.”
The park was able to secure funding for the project through the South Carolina State Park Service. While they have tried to get funding in the past, Richburg said having the AmeriCorps team perform most of the work helped them this time.
Richburg said they originally scheduled three days for the project, but the volunteers finished it in two. “They’re a hard working group. It was easy to work with them,” said Richburg, adding how some AmeriCorps team members cited this as their favorite project so far.
The rebuilt pier goes with the park staff’s goal to always try to make improvements to the park in order to better serve visitors.
Barnwell State Park, located at 223 State Park Road in Blackville, is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to dark.
