Filing opens Friday for school board candidates
Would you like to serve on one of Barnwell County’s three public school boards?
If so, filing opens this Friday, Jan. 12 at 8 a.m. for residents who want to be a candidate for either Barnwell District 19 (Blackville-Hilda Public Schools), Barnwell District 45, or Williston District 29. Filing will remain open until 4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 26.
“Residents desiring to be a candidate for one of the listed offices must file a Statement of Intention of Candidacy with the appropriate school district,” according to a notice of election ad published on page 5A.
There are two open seats in both District 19 and District 29 while one seat is up for grabs in District 45. Karen Jowers and Sharon McClary currently hold the two Blackville seats. In District 29, one seat is held by Russell Overton while the other is the seat vacated by Billy Williams in June 2016. Abraham Sexton’s seat is the only one on the ballot for District 45.
The district offices for the three school districts are located as follows: Blackville School District 19 (297 Pascallas Street, Blackville), Barnwell District 45 (770 Hagood Avenue, Barnwell), and Williston District 29 (12255 Main Street, Williston).
The election will be held on Tuesday, April 10 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. In order to vote in this election, residents must be registered to vote by March 10.
