A Barnwell native has returned home to open a personal injury law office and help his community.

Wil Alexander recently established the Law Office of William H. Alexander, LLC in downtown Barnwell after completing law school and a one-year stint as a law clerk in Chester.

Living in other places, including bigger cities, “made me realize what a special place Barnwell is. It’s special because of the people. I’m really happy to be back in the community,” said Wil, who is the son of Don and Garnette Alexander.

His practice focuses on personal injury law, including car/truck accidents, drunk driving accidents, slip and fall accidents, workplace injuries and Uber accidents. They also take cases involving wrongful deaths, burn injuries, nursing home abuse, medical malpractice, workers’ compensation, and traumatic brain injuries.

“As a personal injury attorney, Wil fights to obtain just compensation for individual’s injuries. Wil’s practice is statewide, representing individuals throughout South Carolina who are injured,” according to his website, www.whalawoffice.com.

Although Wil’s practice focuses on personal injury, he said he is glad to speak with anyone who has a question regarding any legal need.

Helping people has always been important to Wil. “This is a special career where you can help people every day. I want to make a positive impact on people individually and the community as a whole,” he said.

“We want to be here for the people of our community,” said Garnette Alexander, who is the office manager for her son’s law office.

Wil said he wants people to be comfortable and feel at home when they come to the office. He said his mom plays a big part in that because she knows a lot of people from having grown up in Barnwell and previously working in the schools.

They both enjoy working together, although Garnette admits the hardest part is referring to Wil as “Mr. Alexander” when answering the phone or helping clients.

After graduating from Barnwell High School, Wil Alexander earned his B.S. in Applied Economics and Statistics from Clemson University before attending law school at the University of Georgia to earn his Juris Doctor law degree. He spent one semester in Washington, D.C. working at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. After completing law school, Wil worked for one year as a law clerk in Chester for Judge Brian Gibbons in the Sixth Circuit of South Carolina Circuit Court, which is the highest civil and criminal trial court in the state.

“It was a really, really good experience,” he said of gaining a lot of experience in court and handling day-to-day duties for Judge Gibbons.

As Wil looked at the opportunities he had after completing his time as a law clerk, moving back to Barnwell was not a difficult decision. “It was really important for me and my career,” he said. “I want to help out the community that was so good to me growing up.”

In addition to helping clients through his law office, Wil wants to be as involved as he can in the community. He helps with the boys’ varsity basketball team at Barnwell High, which is a “huge passion” for Wil as he played basketball growing up. He also is an ambassador for the Barnwell County Chamber of Commerce and was recently inducted as a member of the Rotary Club of Barnwell County. Wil has also visited students at Barnwell Primary School to discuss judges and attorneys and donated school supplies to local students.

Wil welcomes people to come by his office at 222 Main Street, Barnwell, which is just down the street from the courthouse in the historic Home Bank building that has housed a number of businesses over the years. The office shares a space with the downtown office of Anovotek, where Wil’s father Don and brother Daniel work, and is next door to the family’s Hunter & Oates General Merchandise store.
