The city of Barnwell is nearing completion of several projects including two for city parks.

The first stage of the Lemon Park sports complex was completed earlier this spring in time for young athletes to swing their bats into a new season.

Now the city is nearing completion of another park renovation aimed at family fun.

Emily Randell, the parks and recreation director for the city of Barnwell, said most of the improvements have been completed at Fuller Park as well.

Those improvements include:

• new landscaping along the street side of the hill;

• new paving for the parking area at the basketball courts;

• a picnic area complete with picnic tables and grills where the old playground equipment had been located.

This area has eight wooden picnic tables and four grills for residents to use, she said.

"The city would like to encourage citizens to utilize Fuller Park for their July 4th festivities," Randell said.

The picnic area will be on a first-come, first-serve basis, she said.

The city will complete the renovations of the park with a disc golf course before the end of July, she said.

Although the city does not have current plans for a dog park, Randell said Fuller Park will be "a dog-friendly park" in that pets are welcomed.
