It's "Candid Camera" Barnwell-style.

However, this isn't for entertainment, but law enforcement and it won't be a laughing matter for those caught on camera.

Barnwell Police Chief Todd Gantt said his department recently received a $5,000 grant to purchase two surveillance cameras.

These cameras will be used in areas around the city where litter has become a problem, he said.

Gantt said there are two types of littering taking place in the city.

One is simple littering where an individual either drops trash while walking or driving and the second is illegal dumping, he said.

"The cameras are designed to catch both," Gantt said.

The more remote locations in the city give individuals a sense that no one is watching and that they can dump unwanted items without being caught, he said.

The items dumped range from old tires to mattresses and appliances, Gantt said.

He said old appliances, like freezers, are not only an eyesore but are a danger for young children if they crawl inside.
He said the city holds annual clean-up drives to combat the problem but the new cameras will enhance efforts to catch individuals who litter or dump items around the city.

"Litter is definitely a problem," Gantt said.
