Civil Rights History Conference to be held at Orangeburg
The National Council for History
Education, South Carolina State University,
and Richland 2 Schools are proud to jointly present South
Carolina and the Civil Rights Struggle on February 23 and 24 at South Carolina State University.
This conference, open to the public, will reunite many of the key leaders in
the civil rights struggle for the first time in many years. Attendees will be
able to hear from those leaders as well as nationally-recognized historians of
the civil rights movement about the history of this critical period.
"This is an exceptional
opportunity to hear from folks like the remaining members of the Friendship
Nine who were involved in one of the nation's first sit-down strikes and
Congressman Jim Clyburn," states NCHE Executive Director Peter S. Seibert.
"We are very excited to bring these civil rights leaders together to learn
from them about this critical period in American history," Seibert says.
The conference is open to the
public. The cost for registration is $40 per person and includes a Thursday
evening (February 23) reception for the
Friendship Nine and a private screening of the film Jail No Bail produced by SCETV, breakfast and
lunch on February 24, as well as keynote sessions by Congressman Clyburn,
Professor Darlene Clark Hine, and a roundtable discussion with John Britain,
Willie Legette, Cleveland Sellers, Cedric Johnson, and Mary Moultrie. More than
20 breakout sessions also will be featured.
