A man who murdered his wife in Columbia fled to Barnwell County where he took his own life.
Omar Kenyatta Gordon, 32, of Columbia, was wanted by city of Columbia police on charges of murder and assault and battery with intent to kill stemming from an incident that occurred in Columbia.
On June 25 at about 11 p.m., Gordon appeared in the front yard at 2928 English Ave., Columbia, where his wife was living, according to a press release from the Columbia city police department.
Gordon confronted his wife, Jessica Gordon, 24, and shot her multiple times. She died at the scene, according to the press statement.
Jessica Gordon was staying at this residence with a relative. She and Omar Gordon were not living together here, said Brick Lewis, a public information officer for the Columbia Police Department.
Omar Gordon also shot another female at the house, hitting her once in the leg. The woman was taken to Palmetto Health Richland Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, Lewis said.
That same night, Gordon came to Barnwell County, hiding at a relative's house on Lynx Road, about six miles northeast of Williston off S.C. 39, said Jennifer Timmons, the public information officer for the S.C. State Law Enforcement Division.
At about 8 a.m., June 26, Barnwell County Sheriff Ed Carroll received a call about Gordon.
"We got information that led us to Barnwell (County), said Lewis.
"SLED and the Columbia police called to notify me that he might be in the county," Carroll said.
Around 11:40 a.m., Barnwell County Sheriff's deputies, two Columbia investigators and SLED agents were at the Lynx Road house.
A SLED negotiator talked to Gordon for about two hours.
However, Gordon shot himself and died at the scene, Lewis said.
Lewis said he did not know the type weapon Gordon used in Columbia or whether it was the same one he used on himself.
Gordon had a lengthy criminal record, Lewis said.
