The U.S. Department of Energy's "Road to Recovery" tour is coming to a stop in Barnwell Nov. 12.

The event kicks off at 10 a.m. at the Barnwell One-Stop Career Center on 248 Wall St., and ends at 3:30 p.m.

The event will provide information on job training, employment assistance programs, and details on the remaining Recovery Act jobs at the Savannah River Site, said Paivi Nettamo, a Savannah River Nuclear Solutions spokeswoman.
But the event won't just help individuals find Recovery Act jobs.

"It will help anyone who is looking for a job and we will cater to each individual's needs," said Nettamo.

Participants will get resume writing assistance; help with job searches; tips on job interviewing; help setting up e-mail accounts; and information on job training opportunities through state and federal programs.

The "Road to Recovery" tour had made its way through most of South Carolina and some of Georgia, said Nettamo.

The tour began in Allendale Sept. 21, and it ends Nov. 20 in McCormick, she said.

There have been 1,400 new hires and about 800 jobs have been retained at Savannah River Site, said Nettamo.

This is the second time the tour has come through Barnwell, said Torienia Tucker, the Barnwell County One-Stop director.

She said there was a good show of people for the Nov. 2 event and described it as a collaborative effort between Savannah River Site and One-Stop.

Tucker said important information on the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) was shared at the last event.

The act offers a federally-funded program that provides job training for individuals and individuals don't necessarily have to be unemployed to be eligible, she said.

Youth 17 and up; dislocated workers and adults who meet income-eligibility guidelines can use the program, she said.

If a displaced worker is head of the household, his/her spouse is also eligible, said Tucker.

WIA provides on-the-job training as well as certificates in occupational training, she said.

People who already have a college degree or an occupation certificate are decided on a case-by-case basis for WIA eligibility, she said.
