LEGOs for libraries

Local libraries hope building blocks will increase student participation.
The libraries of the ABBE system are seeking LEGO building block of any kind from residents to start a monthly LEGO Club for children. “It’s become kind of a trend in libraries,” said Kimberly McSpadden, the Barnwell County Library manager.
With LEGO clubs popping up in libraries across America, they felt it was time to build one here. “LEGOs are popular,” said McSpadden. “We can’t keep our LEGO books on the shelves.”
McSpadden hopes the children will use their imaginations, while learning something too. “It’s not necessarily reading related, but it gets children involved in math, science and architecture,” McSpadden said.
The club will likely meet once a month at the Barnwell County Library, and possibly the Williston and Blackville branches. No start date or meeting times have been set yet because donations are still needed, she said.
Depending on the donations, the LEGOs will likely be rotated between libraries.
Donations can be dropped off at the library (40 Burr St., Barnwell) during regular business hours.
For more information or if interested in joining the LEGO club, call the library at (803) 259-3612 or drop by.
