Police complaint comes before Williston town council
Filings - one of complaints and another of candidates - were part of the June 8 regular Williston Town Council meeting.
During the meeting, the council and Mayor Tommy Rivers heard complaints from resident Lonnie Atkins concerning the Williston Police Department.
Atkins said his complaints stem fom several instances some of which occurred between two and three months ago.
In one instance Atkins said officers illegally searched his truck.
On May 30, Atkins said an officer turned in front of him while he was riding his motorcycle, almost causing Atkins to wreck.
Atkins said the young officers are very rude and "very out of control."
Rivers thanked Atkins for his comments and said as a town policy they do not tolerate rudeness.
He asked Atkins to see Williston Police Chief Roger Kaney to make a formal written complaint.
As of June 16, Kaney said Atkins had not made a written report.
Rivers explained this procedure was necessary for the proper channels to follow up with the complaint.
In other council business:
• City Administrator Scott Neely updated council on several on-going items.
First he updated council on the Lyon's property on Harper Street. Neely said the son of the property owner is purchasing the property. This is the same property the town has required the owners to clean up.
Neely said he would keep in touch with the perspective new owner to see if the property is purchased and cleaned up.
• Neely said another property the town has sited for clean up is the Jones Ray Circle property. The town code enforcement officer, Neal Adcox is trying to help the owner, who lives out of state, find a local contractor to demolish the existing house on the property.
• Council members made plans to clean a flower bed near the Dixie-Narco facility with labor from the town. This bed was planted and maintained by S.C. Department of Transportation for some time.
• Pat Fowler, the town clerk, said filing for the general elections will open June 15 and will close June 26 with the election taking place Sept. 8. The seats open are Council members Milton Widener, Jerry Holmes and Wanda Matthews. The mayor's seat is also up for re-election.
Council members Widener and Holmes, as well as the mayor announced their bids for re-election. Council member Matthews was not in attendance at the meeting.
