The Williston-Elko High varsity football team let an opportunity for a home win slip away Friday night against Chesterfield High.
The Blue Devils were hindered by several costly penalties-one of which led to a Chesterfield touchdown.
They were also plagued by two fourth quarter fumbles and a secondary that had all sorts of problems defending the pass in a 25-14 defeat.
The loss puts Williston-Elko High at 0-2 in the standings.
Williston-Elko High head coach Dwayne Garrick said the team played well, but the mistakes were too costly.
"We were in the game, but we kind of fell apart with mistakes and turnovers in the fourth quarter," Garrick said.
"Several times we were in position to make plays and just didn't execute."
The play Garrick was referring to came with the Blue Devils leading 14-13 with 10:12 left in the game. At that moment, the Blue Devils seemed to be in position to take control of the game with Chesterfield High facing a fourth down and 12 at their 49-yard line.
Chesterfield High, however, had a prayer answered on the play when quarterback Dillon Rivers heaved pass down the middle that was hauled in by Josh Rivers, who beat two Blue Devils defenders on the reception for a touchdown.
" I thought the touchdown pass that we gave up on the fourth down play was probably the turning point. If we stop them there, we get the ball in good field position," said Garrick.
After the kickoff, the Blue Devils' offense tried to answer behind the running of Andrew Milligan and Devon Fagans.
The Blue Devils drove into Rams' territory, but a promising drive ended with a fumble at the Rams' 41-yard line.
"We were moving the ball and all of a sudden we had a turnover. It was just that kind of night," Garrick said.
Defensively, things didn't get any better for the Blue Devils after the exchange of possession.
On third down, Rivers' third down pass in the flats fell incomplete, but a penalty for a late hit on the play gave the Rams an automatic first down. Three plays later, Rivers threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Makel Gaston for a 25-14 lead with 4:28 left in the game.
Later, with 3:39 left in the game, the Blue Devils' offense drove into Rams' territory, but the drive ended on another fumble.
For the game, Rivers led the Rams' offense with 331 yards passing and four touchdowns.
Offensively for the Blue Devils, Antonio Coleman found the end zone for the second week in a row. Coleman's seven-yard run in the second quarter gave the Blue Devils a 7-0 lead. Coleman led all Blue Devils rushers with 91 yards. Others playing well included Andrew Milligan with 57 yards on 11 carries. Devon Fagans, who scored on a 12-yard run in the third quarter, finished with 36 yards rushing. Faheem Richberg added 41 yards rushing.
On the defensive side of the ball, Trimayne Whetstone's interception in the end zone ended a Rams' scoring threat. Whetstone and Jacob Vargo each had six tackles. Daniel Smith had a solid outing with five tackles, three quarterback pressures and a sack.
