Lady Blue Devils score victory in tennis play
The Williston-Elko High Lady Blue Devils were hitting on all cylinders Thursday as they overpowered Wade Hampton High 7-0 in tennis play.
It was the first shutout of the season for Williston-Elko High coach Bernard Walters, whose team improves to 2-1 in the standing.
"Very impressive play from a young group," Walters said. "As a group, we are improving with our serves and strokes. I thought we showed a lot of maturity on the court today."
The Lady Blue Devils gained control of the match early on.
Number one singles player Sara Gainey didn't surrender a single game in her 6-0, 6-0 win over Saithera Rey of Wade Hampton.
On court No. 2, Lauren Pruitt went back-and forth with Cassey Kemmerlin of WHHS before claiming a straight set win by scores of 7-6 and 6-4.
At No. 3 singles, Myeshia Jeter of W-E racked up seven aces on her way to a convincing 6-1, 6-1 win over Stephanie Crosby of WHHS.
In No. 4 singles, Octavia Mack of the Lady Blue Devils was on top of her game as she posted a 6-3, 6-0 win over Megan Smith of the Lady Red Devils.

In doubles action, the Lady Blue Devils No. 1 team of Myeshia Jeter and Haley Millard scored a 6-2, 6-0 win.
"I have to give a lot of credit to our players. They kept their focus on the court and made the most of their opportunities. This is the kind of performance that gives us good team confidence going into next week's matches," said Walters.
