For the Jefferson Davis Academy Raiders, tailback Dalton Bell had his second impressive running outing with 266 yards and four touchdowns in Friday's home opener against Patrick Henry Academy.
Quarterback Will Gee, who threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to Wesley Ott also joined in the offensive fireworks with another 100 yard passing night.
However, it wasn't good enough to get a win on the scoreboard. Without a semblance of defense, the Raiders allowed more than 500 yards of offense and eight touchdowns in a 58-36 home loss.
For the Raiders, it was a disappointing effort. On several occasions the Raider defenders simply were out of position or made crucial mistakes that led to big passing plays.
JDA head coach Curt Ott said the team had too many breakdowns.
"We just didn't play well on the defensive side of the ball," Ott said.
"Several times, we had them in third down and long and gave up a long play or touchdown. It was very frustrating because hose were the kind of plays that killed us all game long."
Trailing 8-0 early in the first quarter, the Raiders got on the scoreboard on a four-yard touchdown run by Bell.
The Raiders, however, wasn't able to keep up the scoring pace of a Patriot team which scored the next 24 points to take a 32-6 lead.
Defensively for the Raiders, Wesley Ott had a solid game with 12 tackles, including four for losses and a fumble recovery. Ross Kinard finished with seven tackles and a sack. Cameron Polston had six tackles.
The Raiders will try to bounce back this week against Andrew Jackson Academy.
"We have another tough game Friday night. We can't afford to give up big plays like we did against Patrick Henry and expect to win," said Ott.
