School traffic changes improves safety, quickens dismissal time
A month into the new school year, two Barnwell County principals say changes in their drop-off and pick-up procedures are making things much more efficient.
Barnwell Primary School flipped around their traffic patterns by moving the car line to the road behind the school and the buses to the horseshoe in front.
While it's "flowing great now," Principal Donna Selvey said the first week took longer because more parents typically drive their children to school the first week or so. A rainy first day didn't help, said Selvey, though they are now dismissing car riders five minutes faster than last year.
The main reason for the change was to give cars more room instead of blocking Hagood Avenue. Another reason was the closure of the school's office facing Marlboro Avenue to the public.
Williston-Elko Middle School also changed their dismissal procedure by closing Warren Road to thru traffic from 2:30 to 3:15 p.m.
Principal Greg Sweet said parents have adjusted to the new procedure and it's working well. "Dismissal is safely completed within 15 minutes daily," he said.
