A graveside funeral service for Charles Calvin "Peanut" Melton, 87, of Williston, was held at 10 a.m., Sept. 14, at The Williston Cemetery with military honors accorded. The family received friends after the service at the cemetery on Saturday.

Peanut passed away Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013.
Born in Tallassee, Ala., he was the son of the late Ocie Elie "Solon" Melton and Lula Odell Folks Melton. Peanut was married to the late Mildred Onita McClellan Melton and was the widower of Edna Frances Lucas Melton. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II under General Paton in the Battery B, 74th Field Artillery Battalion. In 1986, he retired from Fluor-Daniels Construction as a pipe fitters superintendent; and formerly owned and operated the Williston Lawn Mower and Saw Shop. He was an avid golfer and hunter who especially enjoyed bird hunting.
Survivors include daughters, Glenda (Emory) McAlister of Lexington, Sandra (Brian) Givens of Williston, Sheila (Joe) Gill of Leesville, La.; daughter-in-law, Debbie Harris Melton of Williston; grandchildren, Michael (Elizabeth) Givens, Jonathan (Sandy) Givens, Josh (Brittany) Givens, Charles Harris Melton (fiancé Megan Grubbs), John Calvin Melton Jr., Christopher (Jessica) McAlister, Jennifer McAlister (Wesley) Backman, Cary (Kristen) McAlister, Jan Baxley (Hal) Rutland, Paula Baxley, Vicki Baxley Nieto, William Parrish, T. J. (Avé) Lamm, Charlene (John) Depew; great-grandchildren, C. J., Haley, Clayton, Lauren, Noah, Oliviah, Ryder, Cody, Blaze, Brian, Derick, Gabe, John Jr., Asher, Anara; sisters, Louise Jones, Rachel Ann Wells.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Gayle M. Baxley; a son, John Calvin Melton; sister, Glenda Arlene "Tots" Christian Folks; brothers, Woodrow Melton and John Ealy Melton.
Folk Funeral Home Inc. and Crematory was in charge of arrangements.
