Barnwell leaps to victory in recreation play
In the battle for bragging rights in Little League football, Barnwell had the last word against Blackville in the Small Fry Division (8 to-10-year-olds) Oct. 1 at Lemon Park.
The game turned into a defensive battle, but the Barnwell Small Fry team had more thrust down the stretch as they leaped past Blackville by a score of 20-6.
In the contest, Blackville won the coin toss and elected to receive the opening kickoff, but went three-and-out on its first possession.
Starting from their own 20-yard line, Barnwell pushed on a 21-yard run by Marcus Robinson and an eight-yard run on second and two by Clay Pender.
Moments later, Barnwell hit pay dirt when quarterback Weston Sandifer went play action pass and connected with Adrian Bell on a 47-yard touchdown pass. After the missed extra point, Barnwell led 6-0 with 2:45 left in the first quarter.
On the ensuing drive, Blackville looked to answer. On first down, Amad Johnson went around right end for 13 yards. Two plays later, Blackville got another first down on an 11-yard run by Demenico Banks.
The drive, however, quickly stalled as Garrison Owens of Barnwell took over at the line-of-scrimmage. Owens forced Blackville's quarterback to fumble back-to-back plays.
On fourth down, Travorus Miller of Barnwell tackled the ball carrier for a three yards loss to end the drive.
With its offense struggling, Blackville's defense took over. For Blackville, Justin Elmore pounced on a Barnwell fumble in the end zone for a touchdown to tie the game at 6-6 going into halftime.
The score remained that way until midway into the third quarter. On a first down play, Barnwell's quarterback lost the handle on a high snap, but Travorus Miller was "Johnny on the spot", scooping up the pigskin and racing 43 yards for a touchdown. The score put Barnwell ahead 12-6 with 5:37 left in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Barnwell mounted a drive to put the game out of reach. On first down, Robinson ran off tackle or 13 yards. Two plays later, Pender gained seven yards on a run. Moments later, Sandifer capped the six-play march with a 39-yard touchdown pass to Bell. Pender ran for the two-point conversion to complete the scoring.
For the game, Blackville's defense was led by Robert Black, Keondra Davis, Kendrick Sabb, Justin Elmore and Larry Thompson.
Barnwell was led on defense by Jackson Solomon, who had a fumble recovery. Others shining included Garrison Owens, Grant Taylor, Britten Sturkie, Ayden Johnson and C.J. Gunnells.
