Gov. Haley should show mercy to poor, needy
Representative Lonnie Hosey's 2013 Legislative Report notes that under Republican Gov. Nikki Haley, S.C. has turned down $800 million dollars in Federal Aid. This money would have provided health insurance to some 320,000 mostly hard working people.
People who make too much money to qualify for Medicaid, but not enough to pay for health insurance even with the government subsidy. I thought these people were the very ones conservative Republicans would desire to help. People trying to make ends meet by working difficult jobs, even two part-time jobs, trying to provide for their families.
I can think of only one reason Gov. Haley would reject this Federal Aid; she hopes to please her Tea Party supporters and gain national standing in hope of becoming the next Sara Palin with her own Fox News talk show. How sad.
The Bible teaches that nations will be judged by how they adhere to God's laws. Even a cursory reading of the prophets and New Testament reveals our Lord requires us to help the disadvantaged, the poor, needy and disabled.
I urge that we reject our bare desires to blame the wounded for their wounds, but rather minister to their needs. For all of us who are Christians, I remind you that we are saved only by God's grace (Eph. 2:8). How can we fail to show grace and mercy to others? "as you would be treated, so treat others".
Thank you so much,
